200 Degrees, the speciality coffee roaster, is launching a nationwide “coffee amnesty” across Yorkshire after its own market research revealed that 80% of Brits regularly waste money on coffee they do not actually enjoy.
The campaign, named Operation Better Brews, will run from Monday, 8th June to Sunday, 21st June 2026. During this two-week window, the roaster is inviting disgruntled coffee drinkers to bring their disappointing, stale, or underwhelming coffee products, such as old supermarket tins or cupboard-bound bags, into any 200 Degrees store in Yorkshire. In exchange, staff will swap the substandard coffee for a free 250g bag of 200 Degrees whole beans or a box of their home-brewing pods.
The complimentary swap will feature the brand’s signature Brazilian Love Affair blend, which is roasted in-house with distinct notes of chocolate, hazelnut, and caramel.

The initiative follows a survey of 1,000 UK coffee consumers commissioned by the brand. The data reveals that the average Brit wastes £7.16 per month, totalling roughly £85 a year, on drinks they secretly dislike, with home-brewed coffee named as a primary culprit. The study also highlighted a “Hall of Shame” for bad coffee sources, with the workplace taking the top spot at 25%, followed closely by petrol or train stations (23%), and a friend or family member’s house (23%).

Furthermore, the data illustrated a distinctly British reluctance to complain. Nearly 40% of respondents admitted to smiling and calling a bad coffee “lovely” to avoid awkwardness, while 38% let the drink go cold, hoping nobody would notice, and 27% confessed to sneakily pouring it away when the host looked away.
Alex Slater, Senior Head Barista and Drinks Development Lead at 200 Degrees, said:
“We thought the research would throw up something interesting, but the scale of it is mad, with just how many people are putting up with bad coffee every day. This campaign is our fun way of showing there’s a better option out there, so if yours isn’t up to scratch, bring it in and we’ll swap it for something better.”
The trade-in promotion will be active across all five of 200 Degrees’ Yorkshire locations, including their branches in Leeds, Barnsley, Sheffield, central York (Low Petergate), and the York Designer Outlet.
