Aldi is the cheapest supermarket for shoppers planning their Christmas feast this year, according to research from the Good Housekeeping Institute (GHI). The study, based on prices as of 18th December, compared the cost of 11 essential Christmas items, from a whole turkey to Christmas pudding.
The analysis found Aldi’s basket costs just £29.35 for all items, followed by Lidl at £32.85 and Morrisons at £33. For shoppers looking to mix and match the cheapest options, GHI’s ultimate Christmas basket combines items from several stores to keep costs low. Highlights include Aldi’s medium turkey at £12.99, sprouts from Aldi or Lidl at just 16p for a 1kg portion, and Co-op mince pies for £1.
Over the past six years, Christmas dinner costs have risen by around 10.5%. Turkeys, brandy butter, and mince pies have seen the biggest price increases, with Aldi’s turkey now 30% more expensive than in 2019. However, some vegetables are cheaper this year thanks to recent supermarket price cuts: sprouts, carrots, and parsnips are all significantly less expensive than six years ago.
Callum Black, Deputy Head of Testing at GHI, said:
“This year people are more conscious than ever about what they should be spending their hard-earned cash on. At a time of year when things are already tight, the rise in prices hasn’t just affected food, but it’s one of the places consumers feel the squeeze most. We’ve pulled together the best prices of everything you’d need to feed a hungry family this Christmas, meaning that whatever your budget, there’s no need to miss out on the joy of Christmas lunch.”
