In the ever-growing list of British wedding quirks, one tasty tradition is sizzling its way into the spotlight – and it’s all about sausages.
Across the UK, brides-to-be are turning their backs on something old, something new, and reaching for something porky. The idea? Bury a sausage the night before your wedding to guarantee sunshine. What started as a word-of-mouth superstition has turned into a full-blown social media trend, with TikTok’s #WeddingSausageChallenge racking up over 10 million views.
Yorkshire sausage makers HECK! have jumped in with both wellies, launching a limited-edition Bride’s Lucky Sausage just in time for wedding season. It’s based on their classic pork recipe – the very one that’s been buried in gardens, flowerbeds and fields by hopeful brides from London to the Scottish Highlands.
“We’ve seen brides carrying crystals and burying bourbon,” says wedding planner Claire Edwards, “but nothing has caught on quite like the sausage.” She’s already had three sausage-burying brides this year – all of whom, she says, had sunny skies on the big day.
“It might sound bonkers, but it’s exactly the kind of fun ritual that makes weddings memorable,” Claire adds. “I’ve actually added ‘bury the sausage’ to my checklist for outdoor ceremonies.”

And it’s not just planners getting involved. Brides are sharing their banger-burying experiences online. TikTok is packed with clips of bridal parties digging into lawns and flower beds, sausage in hand. Some highlights include:
- @MrsSausageSunshine: “Planted my sausage, said a prayer to the pork gods, and voilà – 23°C and zero clouds!”
- @SophieAndSizzles: “I buried five sausages. It was the most magical day of my life.”
- @TheMarriedMoo: “Farming family swore I was mad. Now Mum’s telling her mates to get a sausage in the ground!”

One of the first believers in the banger tradition was Mica Keeble, a former Emmerdale actress who now works at HECK!. She met her husband Roddy while working on the sausage line and tied the knot on the family farm.
“He wooed me with a sausage bap every morning,” she says. “Even added brown sauce without me asking – that’s when I knew it was serious.”
Before their wedding, Mica buried her own sausage. “It sounded mad, but it worked. We had sunshine all day.”
To celebrate the trend, HECK! is offering a free pack of Bride’s Lucky Sausages to the first 50 brides-to-be who apply at heckfood.co.uk and share proof of their upcoming wedding.
So if you’re dreaming of clear skies for your big day, it might be worth popping a porker in the ground. After all, it’s cheaper than a marquee – and a lot of fun to explain in your speech.
