Beloved Japanese restaurant reopens at the Merrion Centre under new management
One of Leeds’ most iconic independent restaurants is officially back. Fuji Hiro, widely regarded as the city’s original Japanese eatery, has reopened its doors today (Wednesday 9th July) at its original home in the Merrion Centre.
First opened in 1997 on Wade Lane, Fuji Hiro quickly became a favourite for its authentic Japanese flavours and laid-back charm. Now, after closing earlier this year, it’s been brought back to life by Leeds-born entrepreneur James Douglas.
With a fresh look and a refined menu, the relaunch stays true to what made Fuji Hiro a hit in the first place. Diners can expect familiar favourites including steaming bowls of ramen, sizzling noodles, crispy gyoza and classic katsu.

Speaking about the reopening, James Douglas said: “We’re hugely excited to finally open the doors and bring Fuji Hiro back to life. This relaunch is all about honouring Fuji Hiro’s legacy while welcoming a new generation of diners to discover what’s made it so special for so many years. We can’t wait to welcome back all the Fuji fans and introduce newcomers to the incredible tastes and aromas of its authentic Japanese cuisine.”
The return of Fuji Hiro marks a new chapter for a venue that has built a loyal following over nearly three decades. News of its closure earlier this year was met with disappointment across the city, but its comeback is already generating fresh excitement.
Charles Newman, associate director at Town Centre Securities PLC (TCS), owners of the Merrion Centre, added: “We’re incredibly excited to see Fuji Hiro reopen its doors. It’s a much-missed gem in Leeds’ food scene and its return brings a real buzz to the Merrion Centre. We know loyal fans will be first in line.”
Fuji Hiro is open Tuesday to Saturday from 12 pm to 10 pm and Sundays from 12 pm to 8 pm.
