Holmfirth’s Danelaw Coffee Scores Big at the 2025 Great Taste Awards

Speciality coffee roaster Danelaw Coffee, based in Holmfirth, is celebrating after nine of its coffees earned stars in the 2025 Great Taste Awards. The highlight is the Mjólka espresso blend, which received the prestigious triple-star award, a rare honour given to fewer than 2% of entries.

The triple-star award recognises products judged ‘extraordinarily delicious’, placing Mjólka among the very best in the UK. Other Danelaw blends also impressed the judges. Wilton Benitez Yellow Typica earned two stars, while Brasil Mogiana, Rwanda Rwamatamu, Colombia El Indio Natural, Fjødr Light Roast, and three decaf varieties all picked up one star each.

Full-bodied with an intense bittersweet flavour, low acidity and tasting notes of dark chocolate, toasted hazelnut and bonfire toffee, Mjolka is best enjoyed with milk.

Since launching in 2022, Danelaw has sourced exceptional coffees worldwide, roasting them at its Holmfirth roastery. Founder David Jameson brings nearly 20 years of experience, including roles as a World Barista Championship judge and certified Arabica Q Grader, a prestigious coffee qualification similar to a wine sommelier. In just over three years, Danelaw has collected 28 Great Taste Awards in total.

This year’s success comes despite a tough 12 months. The business endured two separate roastery fires and David suffered a broken leg last winter after slipping on ice. His six-month recovery challenged the team, but they continued roasting, launched a new retail website, and opened a flagship coffee shop on Huddersfield Road in Holmfirth.

David Jameson says, “It means the world to have nine of our coffees awarded with Great Taste Awards, including a triple-star win for our popular Mjólka blend. I’m proud beyond words. These wins recognise not only flavour but also the team’s perseverance through a tough year.”

Mjólka, named after the Old Norse word for ‘milk’, is a blend of washed and natural coffees from Latin America and Africa. It is slow roasted to a dark colour and is best enjoyed with milk. The Guild of Fine Food judges praised it for its balanced bitterness, rich nutty, smoky and treacle-like flavours, and a bittersweet finish.

Danelaw roasts its coffee fresh every week in Holmfirth. You can buy Mjólka and the other award-winning blends at the Holmfirth coffee shop or online at danelaw.coffee.
