A new coffee micro-store has opened near the Aire Park development in Leeds city centre, offering a modern twist on the traditional café. Habitum, created by Alex Galantino, founder of Leeds’ La Bottega Milanese, uses digital self-service systems to allow customers to order their drinks and pastries. Staff are still on hand to prepare orders, but the focus is on a fast, convenient takeaway experience.
“Habitum comes from an idea I first toyed with during Covid when stores were closing left, right and centre,” said Galantino. “I was imagining what a coffee shop would have to look like to perform in a post-pandemic era. All the components we use—self-service screens, specialty coffee, wellness add-ons—are present in everyday life, and we’ve brought them together to create something a bit different.”
The store’s menu includes espresso classics, matchas, and functional add-ons such as collagen shots and wellness supplements. Customers can choose to sit in or use the digital kiosks to place their orders.

“Having these self-service order screens does not mean our staff don’t interact with our customers,” Galantino commented. “It actually gives us more time to engage with people when they collect their drinks. Some customers have even said they like avoiding unnecessary small talk, which has been an unexpected bonus.”
Galantino said Habitum aims to become a familiar option for coffee lovers across the city. “I hope one day people will see our logo and know they can pop in, get their fix of quality coffee and be on their way. We also have plans to open more micro-stores, including sit-in locations, corporate spaces, and leisure complexes.”
Habitum opened in October and is located at 9 Hunslet Road, LS10 1JQ. The store is open seven days a week, from 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm on Saturdays, and 9am to 3pm on Sundays.
