ROC Café at Ulley Country Park Supports Students with Special Educational Needs

Visitors to Ulley Country Park are now able to enjoy delicious homemade treats, thanks to the ROC Café, a unique initiative that is providing valuable work experience for students with special educational needs and disabilities.

Launched in June, the café is the result of a partnership between Ulley Country Park and Rotherham Opportunities College (ROC). It is operated by students with physical and learning disabilities, and/or autism, under the supervision of experienced catering coordinator Gaynor Cooper. The café runs every Tuesday and Thursday, offering a variety of homemade snacks and treats to park visitors.

Since opening, the ROC Café has helped over 40 students develop essential life skills in preparation for adulthood. The café provides them with hands-on experience in customer service, food preparation, and working in a team – all aimed at building the skills necessary for future employment in the hospitality sector.

“We aim to equip our learners with the vital skills to enjoy fulfilling lives in adulthood,” said Dr Perdita Mousely, Principal of Rotherham Opportunities College. “The café provides an invaluable opportunity for our students to gain work experience in a safe, welcoming environment. Many of our students look forward to spending time here, and for many, it’s one of the highlights of their college week. The feedback from visitors has been heartwarming.”

The café is also committed to using locally sourced ingredients, including meat, fruit, vegetables, and bread. This collaboration with local suppliers adds to the overall community spirit of the initiative.

In addition to the practical skills students gain, the ROC Café also contributes to the local community. Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Cllr Victoria Cusworth, commented, “The café has had a positive impact on the visitor experience at Ulley Country Park. It has also helped students to develop a greater sense of independence, as they prepare for life after college.”

The ROC Café operates from 10:00am to 2:00pm every Tuesday and Thursday, offering a chance for visitors to enjoy tasty, homemade food while supporting an important local cause.
