A new spot is joining the Leeds dining scene this summer, and it’s promising something a little different. The Banksia, opening on the corner of Lower Briggate and Swinegate, will bring bold Mediterranean flavours, small plate dining and a relaxed, vibrant atmosphere to the heart of the city.
The menu is designed around sharing. Think small plates, fresh ingredients and a mix of Mediterranean classics, a few standout favourites and a section called ‘Fire’ that gives a nod to the region’s traditional cooking methods. There’ll also be a dedicated bar menu for after-work drinks or laid-back weekend snacks.
At the helm is award-winning chef Craig Rogan, a well-known name in the Leeds food scene. With a reputation for creativity, sustainability and working closely with local producers, Craig brings a thoughtful, flavour-first approach to his cooking.
“Being a chef has never felt like a job to me,” Craig said. “Joining The Banksia and stepping back into hotel hospitality just felt right. I love leading a team, designing menus that connect with people and creating food that brings a smile.”
The Banksia is connected to Hotel Indigo Leeds and reflects IHG Hotels & Resorts’ commitment to sustainability through its Journey to Tomorrow programme. Craig’s menu has been shaped with that in mind, using Yorkshire-sourced ingredients and cutting down on food waste by making the most of every ingredient.
“Yorkshire’s known as God’s Own Country for a reason,” Craig said. “We’ve got incredible produce on our doorstep, and this menu is really a celebration of that. It’s the kind of food I love to eat, so it’s even better getting to cook it for others.”
The name ‘The Banksia’ comes from a vibrant wildflower that flourishes after fire. The team behind the opening hopes the restaurant becomes a place where flavours, cultures and people come together.
General Manager Simon Grace said: “We want The Banksia to be a place that feels welcoming from the minute you walk in. With Craig’s experience and passion, it’s the perfect partnership to bring something new and exciting to Leeds.”
