New research from Yorkshire Tea has found that just 14% of tea drinkers regularly use a teapot, despite its benefits for making a better brew.
The survey revealed that almost nine in ten (86%) people either avoid teapots completely or only use them occasionally. Gen Z were found to be the keenest, with 19% of 18–24-year-olds using one daily, more than any other generation.
While many households own a teapot, one in five admitted they rarely take it out of the cupboard. The study also showed that 98% of tea drinkers are unaware of the advantages of using one.
To highlight the benefits, Katie Kippax, tea buyer at Yorkshire Tea, shared four reasons why a teapot improves the process.
Katie commented: “While brewing in a teapot does take a little more time, they were created to allow the proper time and space for the tea to infuse fully in the water. Because of the slightly longer timings, you get a better and more fully rounded brew.”
She added: “Tea loves heat, so warm up your teapot to help brew the tea better and maintain the temperature for longer. A cold pot will cause the water to cool much quicker. If you want to go all out, using a tea cosy adds an extra layer of insulation to help retain the heat. Instead of pouring any leftover hot water down the drain, pour it into your mug to keep it warm whilst you wait!”

Katie also said: “One of the biggest advantages of using a teapot to make a brew is that it makes it much harder to get it wrong! As long as you warm the pot, use freshly boiled water, and leave it for 3-4 mins, you’re guaranteed to get a decent brew.”
On getting the order right, she commented: “Using a teapot ensures tea is made in the order that results in the tastiest brew – tea first, then water, and milk last. The tea and hot water go in the teapot to brew before any milk is added, so there’s no messing up. You’re bound to get the tastiest brew!”
