A group of Painting & Decorating students from Leeds College of Building has teamed up with local artist Nicolas Dixon to create a vibrant football-themed mural at GOALS soccer centre in Kirkstall.
The all-female group of City & Guilds Level 1 students spent two weeks completing the large-scale artwork in challenging conditions. The project transformed a blank wall in the shooting area into a striking visual piece inspired by football, Leeds’ cityscape, and Dixon’s distinctive artistic style.
Denis Metcalf, the college’s Enrichment Manager, said: “We’ve had a brilliant relationship with GOALS for over 15 years and regularly use their facilities for student enrichment and fitness. Steve, the Facilities Manager, suggested creating an artwork to transform the space, and we were happy to assist.”
Denis approached Leeds-born artist Nicolas Dixon, known for murals at Leeds Kirkgate Market, Trinity Shopping Centre, and LUFC’s Elland Road. Dixon was eager to collaborate and pass on his expertise to the students, who volunteered their time to take part.
“The students got so much out of this,” Denis commented. “Nick’s attitude is that anything is possible, and he understands that hidden talents can emerge when people try new things with an open mind. The students learned teamwork, developed their creativity, and created something thousands of people will see each year.”

John Stevenson, a Painting & Decorating lecturer at the college, praised the students’ dedication: “They conducted themselves brilliantly, working outside in freezing conditions on some days. They volunteered their time and absolutely smashed the end result. They were really brave to put their creativity on show and are a real credit to the college.”
The project is part of Leeds College of Building’s commitment to hands-on learning through employer partnerships. Previous student projects have included work at Headingley Cricket Club, Herd Farm activity centre, and a local scout hut.
Artist Nicolas Dixon said: “The dedication the students showed was impressive. These were some of the coldest conditions I’ve painted in over 15 years, so hats off to them. As the project progressed, I could see their inner artist coming out. They can be very proud of what they’ve achieved.”

A spokesperson from GOALS added: “We are thrilled with how the kick wall looks. Customers frequently comment on it, and we can now incorporate it into kids’ parties. The students should be proud of their work on this stunning piece of art.”
The project coincides with national Colleges Week, celebrating the impact of colleges on local communities.
