68 New Briggate, Leeds LS1 6NU · 1 minute walk

Opening times: Tue–Sat from 18:00 | Vice cocktail bar: Tue–Sat from 17:00

The closest truly special restaurant to Leeds Grand Theatre, and one of the finest in the city. Chef Jono at V&V sits almost directly opposite the theatre on New Briggate, making it the most natural pre-show fine dining destination in the area. Chef patron Jono Hawthorne, a MasterChef: The Professionals finalist in 2020 and a proud Yorkshireman who has trained at Michelin-starred Noma in Denmark, Quay in Sydney and The Box Tree in Ilkley, runs a tasting menu operation of real ambition and skill.

The menu changes monthly and is rooted in seasonal British produce, foraged ingredients and serious culinary technique, with options available for vegetarians and vegans alongside the signature tasting menu. The cocktail lounge downstairs, Vice, was recently named one of the top ten cocktail bars in the UK, making V&V a natural choice for drinks before or after the show, too. With a 4.8 rating on OpenTable from nearly 1,000 diners, it’s one of the most consistently praised fine dining restaurants in Leeds. A genuinely special choice for a genuinely special night out.

The Cut & Craft is a stylish steak and seafood restaurant housed within the beautifully restored 19th-century Victoria Quarter, just a short stroll from the Grand Theatre. Named Restaurant of the Year at the Yorkshire National Business Hero Awards in both 2023 and 2024, it’s become one of the most celebrated independent restaurants in Leeds city centre. The signature flat iron steak, prepared by an in-house butcher, is a must, and the menu’s commitment to locally sourced and freshly prepared food extends across everything from the starters to the desserts. Interiors are warm and atmospheric, service is sharp, and the cocktail bar is one of the best in the building. Open daily for lunch and dinner with brunch and roasts at weekends.

The Light, The Headrow, Leeds LS1 8TL · 6 minute walk

Opening times: Mon–Thu 12:00–22:00 | Fri–Sat 12:00–23:00 | Sun 12:00–21:00

A Leeds city centre institution, Browns in The Light is the sort of reliably excellent brasserie you return to again and again. The grand, spacious interior – all high ceilings, warm lighting and elegant booth seating – makes it well-suited to a pre-theatre dinner, and the broad menu of classic British and European dishes covers all bases. Steak, fish, pasta, sharing platters and a well-chosen wine list make it easy to please a group with varied tastes, and the kitchen executes consistently well. Pre-theatre menus are available, and booking is recommended for evening visits, particularly on show nights.

Tharavadu

7-8 Mill Hill, Leeds LS1 5DQ · 7 minute walk

Opening times: Tue–Fri 12:00–14:00 & 17:30–22:00 | Sat 12:00–22:00 | Sun 12:00–16:00 | Closed Mon

One of the most acclaimed restaurants in Leeds, Tharavadu, has been wowing diners with its authentic South Indian Kerala cuisine since 2013. Named in the UK’s Top 100 Restaurants by SquareMeal three years running (2023, 2024 and 2025), awarded Best Indian Restaurant in Leeds multiple times and still one of the most talked-about dining destinations in the city, it more than justifies the short walk from the Grand Theatre. Head chef Ajith Kumar’s kitchen is known for its bold aromatics, layered flavours and exceptional seafood – the Meen Pollichathu (tilapia wrapped in banana leaves and grilled) is something of a signature. The menu takes a little reading; each dish comes with a small written story about its origins, but Jay Rayner visited in 2024 and described it as food that makes you “profoundly happy.” A special restaurant, perfect for a special night out.

Bundobust

6 Mill Hill, Leeds LS1 5DQ · 7 minute walk

Opening times: Mon–Thu 12:00–22:00 | Fri–Sat 12:00–23:00 | Sun 12:00–21:00 | No reservations – walk-ins only

Right next door to Tharavadu and one of Leeds’ most beloved independent restaurants, Bundobust is a brilliant choice if you want something more relaxed before the show. The concept is simple: Gujarati-inspired Indian street food served in generous small plates alongside an outstanding selection of craft beers. The food is almost entirely vegetarian and vegan, the atmosphere is lively and communal, and the prices are very reasonable for Leeds city centre. The Bundo Combo sharing platter is the way to go for a group – it gives you a taste of most of the menu without the agonising decision of choosing just one or two dishes. Walk-ins are welcome, but it fills up fast on evenings, so it’s worth arriving a little early.

Uyare

Victoria Gate, George Street, Leeds LS2 7AU · 8 minute walk

Opening times: Wed–Thu 17:00–22:00 | Fri 12:00–23:00 | Sat 11:00–23:00 | Sun 11:00–21:00 | Closed Mon–Tue

Born from the success of Tharavadu, Uyare is Leeds’ newest rooftop restaurant and bar, opened June 2025 at Victoria Gate, and it’s already one of the most talked-about dining destinations in the city. Spanning 7,000 sq ft across an impressive rooftop space with panoramic city views and heated outdoor seating, it brings the rich flavours of Kerala to the Leeds skyline in spectacular fashion. The small plates-style menu features inventive South Indian dishes designed for sharing, alongside a superb cocktail list. Monthly jazz nights and a weekend bottomless brunch (from £40 per person) make it equally brilliant for a pre-show occasion or a long post-show evening. Book well in advance – it’s deservedly popular.

Planning Your Visit To Leeds Grand Theatre

A few practical tips to help the evening run smoothly:

Getting there: Leeds Grand Theatre is at 46 New Briggate, Leeds LS1 6NZ. It’s a 10-minute walk from Leeds City Station via the Headrow, or a 5-minute walk from Leeds Bus Station. Several city centre car parks are within easy walking distance, including the Q-Park on Wade Lane (7-minute walk) and the NCP on Merrion Street (6-minute walk).

Timing: Most evening performances at the Grand start at 7:30pm, with doors opening around 45 minutes before curtain up. If you’re dining at V&V or Tharavadu, both of which prefer a more relaxed pace, aim to be seated by 5:30pm at the latest. Bundobust and Browns are better choices if you’re arriving later and need to be out by 7pm.

Booking: Essential for V&V, Tharavadu, Uyare and Issho, particularly on performance nights when all four fill up quickly. Bundobust doesn’t take reservations – arrive early to avoid a wait.

Post-show: Several of the restaurants above serve until 10pm or later, making them equally good for a post-curtain supper. V&V’s cocktail lounge Vice is open until late and is our favourite post-show destination in the area, particularly after a big opera or ballet night.
