The National Coal Mining Museum for England is inviting families, animal lovers, and anyone who loves a bit of history to head over for one of its absolute sweetest events of the year.
This Saturday, 11th July, the museum is throwing a massive birthday celebration for its much-loved resident ponies and shire horse – Eric, Ernie, Bud, and Aladdin. Dubbed ‘Pony Party Day’, the event is set to be packed with a brilliant schedule of games, entertainment, and a few special surprises along the way.
Visitors can look forward to a full day of horse-themed fun where the museum’s four-legged stars take absolute centre stage. From face painting and balloon modelling to hobby horse racing, pony pedicures, and giant birthday cakes, it is shaping up to be an unforgettable afternoon out for the whole family. It is also a lovely way to celebrate the incredibly important role pit ponies played in Britain’s mining history.
Throughout the day, you will be able to discover some fascinating stories and facts about the resident animals through fun interactive games and talks from the experts. Families can test their knowledge with a special Pony Quiz, while free horsekeeper talks and live harness demonstrations will offer a brilliant behind-the-scenes look at how the museum’s dedicated team cares for and works with these lovable animals every day.
The party atmosphere will be spread across the entire site with hobby horse games, crafty workshops, and a dedicated horse trail to follow. To make things even more festive, the Tingley Brass Band will be performing live throughout the day to provide a proper Yorkshire soundtrack to the celebrations.
One of the main highlights of the day will be the unveiling of a very special portrait alongside the cutting of the official birthday cake, giving everyone the chance to join in and wish Eric, Ernie, Bud, and Aladdin a massive happy birthday. Guests can also treat themselves to plenty of party food, including ice cream and birthday cake, making it a true celebration for all generations.

Many of our visitors have grown up visiting them, and they return time and again to see them, making them much-loved members of our museum family.
