The Martin House Children’s Hospice charity shop in Acomb is celebrating its 15th anniversary this weekend, marking a decade and a half of raising hundreds of thousands of pounds to support children and families across Yorkshire.
First opening its doors in July 2011, the Acomb shop will officially celebrate the major milestone this Saturday, 18th July. Over the past 15 years, the shop has embedded itself into the local community, with thousands of donated items finding new homes while raising crucial funding for the hospice.
Since its launch, the shop’s annual sales have increased by more than 32%, climbing from £62,067 in its first full financial year to more than £100,000 in 2025/26.
This steady success has been driven by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, many of whom have supported the venture since day one. Shop Manager Carol Atkinson, who has led the Acomb shop since its opening morning, reflected on the journey: “It’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years. We’ve built such a wonderful community around the shop and I’m incredibly proud of everything we’ve achieved together. Every donation, every purchase and every hour our volunteers give helps make a real difference to the children and families supported by Martin House.”
Atkinson recalled that one of the shop’s most memorable moments occurred around eight years ago, when she arrived to open up and spotted what looked like scraps of paper on the floor behind the door.
“It turned out to be £20 and £10 notes, along with a handwritten note saying, ‘Hope this helps. I don’t want it.’ There was £2,000 in total,” Atkinson said. “It was an incredible act of generosity that none of us will ever forget.”

The shop is currently supported by 12 volunteers, including Eileen, who originally joined for a temporary six-week placement shortly after the store opened in 2011 and has remained a dedicated volunteer ever since.
Money raised through the retail network directly funds specialist care and support for more than 550 children and young people with life-limiting conditions, as well as 200 bereaved family members across West, North, and East Yorkshire. These essential services—which include planned respite stays, symptom management, end-of-life care, and bereavement support—are provided entirely free of charge to families.
Stephanie Rimmington, Head of Retail at Martin House, praised the local impact: “Our charity shops are at the heart of their local communities, and Acomb is a fantastic example of that. The incredible commitment of Carol, her team of volunteers and the loyal support of local people has helped generate vital funds… We look forward to the shop continuing to thrive for many years to come.”
To thank the public, the shop will offer special promotional deals this Saturday, 18th July. Local residents are encouraged to celebrate by visiting the shop, donating high-quality pre-loved items, or inquiring about open volunteering opportunities.
