With the October half term approaching, families across Yorkshire have plenty of opportunities to enjoy Halloween and autumn-themed events without spending a penny. The Principle Trust, a Skipton-based children’s charity, has compiled a list of free activities to help ensure all children can make lasting memories during the school break.
Pumpkin Carving
Pumpkin carving remains a firm favourite for families at this time of year. In Keighley, The Three Horses Pub is hosting a Halloween party with free pumpkin carving and fancy dress. In Leeds, Trinity Shopping Centre will run craft sessions throughout the week, including pumpkin decorating, face painting, and other seasonal activities. Some events provide pumpkins, while others ask families to bring their own, but all promise a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.
Libraries and Museums
Yorkshire’s museums and libraries offer free half-term activities suitable for rainy days. Leeds City Museum is hosting art workshops where children can add their creative touch to a giant spirograph artwork and meet artist Lesley Halliwell. Bradford Industrial Museum and Bolling Hall will also hold craft sessions and spooky storytelling events, allowing children to learn, play, and create together.
National Trust Sites
Families who prefer the outdoors can explore Yorkshire’s National Trust sites. While some properties charge admission, free activities and walks are available at several locations. Longshaw Estate in the Peak District offers guided activity walks, while Hardcastle Crags near Hebden Bridge has self-guided trails with hidden pumpkins and autumn wildlife. Many sites provide free “50 Things To Do Before You’re 11¾” activity sheets to encourage children to explore nature.
Spooky Community Events
Local towns and villages are hosting free, family-focused Halloween events. In Leeds, Kirkgate Market will host a “Wizardry Fun” day with wand-making, games, and balloon modelling. Skipton offers a Pumpkin Path Trail along the high street, and Copmanthorpe Recreation Centre is holding a free disco with a DJ, games, and face painting.
Arts and Crafts
Rainy days can be filled with creative activities. Whitby and Guisborough libraries are hosting Halloween craft sessions, Wakefield library has a slime-making session, and Cutlery Works in Sheffield is offering monster puppet-making and trick-or-treat bag screen printing workshops.
Andrew Davies, Director and Trustee of The Principle Trust, said, “School breaks can be a tough and stressful time for many families, particularly during the cost-of-living crisis. At The Principle Trust, we believe every child deserves to make happy memories, regardless of circumstance. Our hope is that this list helps families across Yorkshire enjoy a fun and worry-free half term together.”
Families can access a full list of free half-term activities across Yorkshire through The Principle Trust to plan a week of fun, spooky, and creative experiences.
