This week (Monday 7th – Friday 11th March) Benny’s sandwich shop in Wakefield is working with Great British Bake Off (GBBO) contestant Karen Wright, to offer traditional Ukrainian food as part of the #CookforUkraine campaign to raise funds needed to aid children and families in Ukraine who have been displaced by the current situation.
Every day this week between 10.30 am and 2.30 pm Benny’s and Karen will be offering a traditional Ukrainian Borscht served with Pampushky.
Borscht is a hearty, root vegetable soup with a distinct pink colouring from the key ingredient, beetroot. Whilst being a traditional Ukrainian dish, it’s also vegan, gluten-free and vegetarian. Pampushky, Ukrainian garlic bread rolls, are a perfect accompaniment to the Borscht with their soft texture and intense garlic taste. The soup and roll combination is priced at £3.25 and all proceeds go directly to the charity. Ben and Karen hope the initiative can raise at least £250.
During the first COVID lockdown, and before he opened Benny’s, Ben teamed up with Karen Wright as part of a COVID workforce to prepare and cook meals for the elderly and vulnerable during the pandemic. Along with others, they made hundreds of meals and desserts.
This led Ben to fall back in love with his passion for cooking and he decided to start his own business, Benny’s, which opened its doors in November. Since opening, Benny’s has helped local charities and now Ben wants to help those in need in Ukraine.
Benny’s is located on Caldervale Road, Wakefield, WF1 5PE and can be contacted on 01924 917007. Borscht and Pampushky can be pre-ordered ready for collection and just drop into the shop.
