Genghis Khan Exhibition Coming To Leeds – With Rare Artefacts Never Before Seen In The UK

One of the most extraordinary exhibitions to come to Yorkshire in years opens at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds on 26th June 2026, and it’s a UK premiere.

Genghis Khan: How the Mongols Changed the World brings together 250 rare objects from Mongolia’s national collections, many of which have never previously left the country, let alone been seen in the UK. Ancient saddles, ceramics, inscribed coins and the largest spearhead ever found in Mongolia will all be on display, telling the story of one of history’s most formidable and complex figures – and the vast empire he forged against extraordinary odds.

What The Exhibition Covers

The exhibition traces Genghis Khan’s extraordinary rise from exile and betrayal to the leadership of an empire that stretched from Europe to China. It explores how the Mongols reshaped the political, cultural and military landscape of the medieval world. The objects on display date from the 1st to the 14th centuries, drawn from the collections of the Chinggis Khaan National Museum in Mongolia, and they are, quite simply, unlike anything previously shown in this country.

Particularly compelling is the exhibition’s treatment of the women of the Mongol Empire. The story of Genghis Khan’s daughter, Alakai Beki, is featured prominently, revealing the significant and surprising power wielded by women in the Mongol court, a dimension of the story that is rarely told.

What The Director General Said

Nat Edwards, Director General and Master of the Armouries, described the exhibition as a moment of genuine historical significance.

“Cutting across ethnic, cultural and religious distinctions, Genghis Khan forged a new political and military force, the like of which had never before been seen,” he said. “In a moment of vision and commitment, history changed, and the balance of power began to shift. Today, the epic story of the Mongol Empire, brought into life through these amazing treasures, feels like something to which we should all pay attention – and it’s an honour to bring this exhibition to the Royal Armouries.”
