Great British Bake Off Winner David Atherton Leads New Yorkshire Coast Campaign

Great British Bake Off (GBBO) star David Atherton has emerged as the face of an exciting new campaign aimed at propelling the region to the forefront of UK food and travel destinations in 2024.

Fresh from his victory in series 10 of GBBO, Atherton has returned to his roots to collaborate with the brains behind Yorkshire’s ultimate road trip, ‘Route YC,’ in an effort to elevate the Yorkshire Coast as a premier destination for short breaks and day trips this year.

The Yorkshire Coast boasts an array of culinary delights, ranging from local seafood eateries and bustling bistros to cosy cafes and iconic family bakeries. Atherton, known for his culinary prowess, is embracing the challenge of showcasing the region’s authentic hospitality to food enthusiasts and their furry companions.

Spanning six captivating destinations along the Yorkshire Coast, from the picturesque Spurn Point to the historic charm of Whitby, the campaign invites visitors to immerse themselves in the golden sandy beaches of Hornsea and Bridlington, as well as explore Scarborough, Filey, and Withernsea.

One highlight along the gastronomic trail is Botham’s, a beloved family institution located on Skinner Street in Whitby. Boasting delectable treats such as Whitby Lemon Buns and Whitby Gingerbread, Botham’s offers a true taste of Yorkshire.

For those seeking a more refined dining experience, Wolds Restaurant at Orchard Lodge in Flixton, led by acclaimed chef Michael Burgoyne, beckons with its commitment to locally-sourced, sustainable, and seasonal fare, earning it the distinction of being the only two AA Rosette restaurant in the Scarborough area.

Atherton himself has singled out Marie Antoinette’s on Church Street in Whitby as a personal favourite, lauding its scones as the best on the Yorkshire Coast.

Further enriching the culinary landscape is The Farrier at Cayton, a modern luxury restaurant with rooms that warmly welcomes dogs as part of the family. With a focus on seasonal menus showcasing locally-sourced produce, The Farrier promises an unforgettable dining experience for both humans and their four-legged companions.

Hailing from Ruswarp near Whitby, Atherton’s passion for local and seasonal cuisine from his native Yorkshire Coast shines through. Accompanied by his three-year-old rescue dog Kai, Atherton is on a mission to explore the region’s best dog-friendly venues and experiences.

Expressing his enthusiasm for Route YC’s 2024 campaign, Atherton remarked, “Route YC is a true celebration of the best the Yorkshire coastline has to offer. There are so many great places to explore along the Yorkshire Coast, but I was surprised how many serve amazing local food and drink and are dog-friendly.”

Encouraging visitors to craft their own culinary and dog-friendly adventures, Atherton and the Route YC team invite guests to stray off the beaten path and discover the hidden gems of the region.

For those travelling with pets, the Bike & Boot in Scarborough offers a modern seafront retreat complete with dog-friendly amenities and quirky rooms. Similarly, The Little Angel in Whitby brews its own ales and repurposes brewing waste into dog treats, embodying the region’s commitment to sustainability and pet-friendly hospitality.

Kerry Carruthers, CEO of Route YC, expressed excitement about the collaboration with GBBO winner David Atherton, underscoring his role in making the Yorkshire Coast a destination of choice for food enthusiasts and their four-legged friends in 2024.

With over 250 tourism, leisure, and hospitality businesses onboard, Route YC is dedicated to showcasing the best of the Yorkshire Coast and boosting the local economy.
