Halloween Fun Underground at the National Coal Mining Museum

The National Coal Mining Museum is set for a spooktacular October half-term, offering families a mix of thrills, creativity and autumn charm.

From Wednesday 29th October to Sunday 2nd November, visitors can step into Spooky Stories from the Coal Shed, a free drop-in storytelling experience that brings eerie mining myths and legends to life. It’s part of a packed programme designed to keep families above and below ground entertained.

For those who like a challenge, the Minecraft Escape Room returns on 25th, 26th October and 1st, 2nd November, while crafty kids can make creations inspired by the museum’s pumpkin-orange mine water.

Saturday 25th October is shaping up to be the biggest day of the week with the Black to Green Festival. The festival will feature recycled crafts, storytelling, theatre, and nature walks. Families can also catch Greta’s Glorious Garden puppet show, join the Meet the Trees walk, or meet the creepy crawlies in a Minibeast Encounter with Lion Learners.

Outdoors, the Autumn Scavenger Hunt runs on 29th and 31st October, while the Family Lantern Making Workshops take place from 29 to 31 October. Lanterns made during the sessions will later shine in the museum’s Light Up Festival parade in November.

Halloween night itself promises a classic treat. On Friday 31st October, families can settle in for a screening of Hocus Pocus, complete with spooky snacks and a Best Dressed competition for those who come in costume.

Visitors can refuel at the café, which will be serving seasonal favourites including “terrifying treats” and the much-anticipated spooky spiced pumpkin latte.

Lynn Dunning, CEO of the National Coal Mining Museum, said: “It really is going to be an exciting week at the museum with so many activities both indoors and out, so whatever the weather, the fun won’t stop! With something to suit all budgets, we have lots of Halloween themed fun as well as our amazing interactive galleries, adventure playground, Time Tunnel experience and horsekeeper talks.”

With free and low-cost options throughout the week, it’s an inviting way for families to make the most of the autumn break, all while discovering the stories and spirit of Yorkshire’s mining past.
