A massive lineup of free learning sessions is opening up to the public across Yorkshire next week to help everyday people spot the signs of abuse and neglect.
It’s all part of Safeguarding Week, kicking off on Monday, June 15th, and the theme this year is simple: safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Councils and safety partnerships from North Yorkshire, York, Hull, and the East Riding have teamed up to build a huge programme of more than 60 sessions.
While some events are strictly for professionals, a huge chunk of the programme is completely free for members of the public, parents, carers, and volunteers. The sessions are happening both online and face-to-face, covering crucial topics like domestic abuse, autism and ADHD support, modern slavery, and rough sleeping outreach.
Local community safety teams and North Yorkshire Police are also hitting the road all week to chat with residents in person. You can catch them at pop-ups in Pickering Market, Filey Library, Tadcaster, Eggborough, Scarborough, Selby, and Skipton.
Cllr Janet Sanderson, from North Yorkshire Council, said:
“Safeguarding is about protecting children and adults from abuse or neglect and educating people around them to recognise the signs and report concerns… Each session will be delivered by inspirational and motivational speakers, all of whom are experts in their field and I would encourage as many people as possible to sign up.”
