JORVIK Viking Festival 2025 Brings Viking History to Life in York

York’s famous JORVIK Viking Festival returns from 17–23 February 2025, offering an exciting glimpse into the world of the Vikings with hands-on activities, workshops, and vibrant entertainment. The festival, said to be the largest of its kind in Europe, is perfect for anyone fascinated by Viking history, myths, and culture.

“The world’s fascination with the Vikings has grown significantly over the 40 years we have been hosting JORVIK Viking Festival,” said Gareth Henry, organiser of the festival for York Archaeology. “TV shows like The Vikings have really expanded the audience, so we are making sure that this year’s festival keeps our adult visitors fully engaged.”

Exciting New Events

This year introduces fresh activities, including:

  • Leatherworking Workshops: On 17 February, participants at Barley Hall can try crafting leather bracers using traditional tools. Tickets are £40 per person, including all materials.
  • Rum Tasting with Villains Rum: On 18 February, attendees will learn about Viking queen Gunnhildr while sampling five spirits, including a honey rum inspired by her. Held at Barley Hall, tickets cost £35 and include a miniature bottle as a keepsake.
  • Dungeons & Dragons with Johnny Chiodini: On 20 February, players can join a large-scale game with 34 participants and an unpredictable storyline. Tickets are £25 per person.

Festival Favourites Return

Traditional highlights include the Viking Feast on 18 February at Merchant Adventurers Hall. This atmospheric dinner features a three-course meal inspired by Viking fare, live entertainment, and storytelling. New this year, the feast will host a Best Dressed Viking and Best Beard Contest. Tickets are £95, with limited availability until 31 January.

Other returning favourites include traditional crafting like nalebinding (Viking knitting), pottery sessions, mead tasting, and storytelling. The Helen Thirza Addyman lecture on 20 February will explore 40 years of the JORVIK Viking Centre, with insights from Dr Chris Tuckley and a screening of a new documentary.

A Vibrant Fringe

The festival fringe offers even more variety, including a tattoo expo featuring artists inspired by Viking heritage and the return of Mythos: Ragnarok, a wrestling performance retelling the Viking apocalypse. Both events lead into the festival’s Evening Spectacular at the Eye of York.

“The festival fringe is incredibly strong this year,” said Henry. “And, of course, it will be the final week of our Winter at JORVIK event, with Coppergate covered in Viking-age snow!”
