New Exhibition at National Coal Mining Museum Showcases Sculptures by Graham Ibbeson

The National Coal Mining Museum for England is set to host a major new exhibition featuring the work of renowned sculptor Graham Ibbeson. From Coal Queens to Comedy Kings: The Sculptures of Graham Ibbeson opens on Saturday, 11 January 2025, offering visitors a unique trail across the museum’s indoor and outdoor spaces.

The exhibition, free to enter, explores key moments in coal mining history alongside sculptures of beloved entertainers with ties to the industry. Highlights include the Coal Widow, the Oaks Disaster, 1866, Memorial on loan from the National Union of Mineworkers, as well as works depicting Eric Morecambe, Laurel & Hardy, and Ken Dodd.

Lynn Dunning, CEO of the National Coal Mining Museum, said:
“We are delighted to be working with the People’s Sculptor, Graham Ibbeson once again. This exhibition is a wonderful way to discover more about the history of coal mining and the well-loved comedy characters that have links to the industry. It’s a great way to explore and makes for a perfect trip out.”

Visitors will find sculptures placed throughout the museum, from gallery spaces and historic buildings to the café and pony stables. The museum encourages attendees to join the fun by recreating iconic poses of the characters and sharing their photos on social media using the hashtag #CoalQueensComedyKings.
