Sherburn-in-Elmet, North Yorkshire – A new era of healthcare has dawned in North Yorkshire with the grand opening of the newly refurbished and extended Sherburn Group Practice. The state-of-the-art medical centre, situated on Beech Grove, celebrated its unveiling earlier this month, with a ceremony graced by ITN Calendar news presenter Christine Talbot. One of the practice’s longest-serving former doctors, Dr Andrew Peel, delivered a heartfelt speech, and senior partner Dr Catriona Osman had the honour of cutting the ceremonial ribbon.
Originally opened in 1976, Sherburn Group Practice has grown exponentially from serving 4,000 patients to nearly 12,000 today. This growth is expected to continue as the local housing development progresses. To accommodate this increase, the practice, which currently employs 45 staff, plans to recruit additional receptionists, administrators, doctors, and nurses in the near future.
The £2.6 million redevelopment features 19 consultation rooms, spacious waiting areas spread across three floors, and lift access. Among the new services offered are urgent care, phlebotomy, retinal screening, and ultrasound scanning. The expansion allows the centre’s primary care network staff—including social prescribers, pharmacists, mental health practitioners, health coaches, paramedics, and physiotherapists—to provide more face-to-face services.
Dr Charlotte Anderson, Partner and GP at Sherburn Group Practice, expressed her enthusiasm about the expanded facilities. “As our community has grown over the years, we reached a point where we simply needed more space to widen our services. We consistently want to provide the very highest standards of frontline medical care that our patients deserve, and by doubling the number of clinical rooms we have available, we have much more room and capacity to do just this.”
Dr Anderson also extended her gratitude to those who supported the project: “We want to thank the NHS, Selby District, and our financial backers from Lloyds Bank for helping to make this happen, as well as our staff and loyal patients for their continued support.”
The new facility isn’t just about expanding space; it’s also about forward-thinking and sustainability. The building includes a heat source pump and a ventilation system that self-regulates its temperature, showcasing a commitment to environmental responsibility.
Funding for this ambitious project was secured through a combination of sources: an £850,000 loan from Lloyds Banking Group, a £1 million contribution from the NHS, and £750,000 from Selby District Council, supplemented by the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL).
Stuart Harper, healthcare relationship director for the North East and Yorkshire at Lloyds Bank, highlighted the broader impact of the new centre: “It’s incredibly fulfilling to have played a part in bringing this new medical centre to life. With the increasing demand for healthcare, particularly as our population ages and health needs become more complex, the significance of this facility extends far beyond its walls. For residents both in Sherburn-in-Elmet and the wider surrounding area, having access to this enhanced service right on their doorstep will mean vital care and support when they need it most, just a stone’s throw away.”
Looking ahead, the second phase of the project will see the re-opening of the Old Hungate Hospital building in August, which will further extend services including sexual health, physiotherapy, and facilities for district nurses.
Sherburn Group Practice continues to be a pivotal institution in the community, not just delivering healthcare but also shaping its future by training the next generation of healthcare professionals. With the expanded facilities, the practice is set to enhance its educational role, providing greater opportunities for students from Hull York Medical School.
As Sherburn-in-Elmet grows, the Sherburn Group Practice stands ready to meet the challenge, committed to delivering top-tier healthcare services to its ever-expanding community.
