New research from M&S Pet Insurance reveals that for the majority of UK pet owners, their furry friends are not just animals but cherished family members. A staggering 92% of pet parents consider their pets part of the family, and this Christmas, they’re going all out to show it.
Nearly half (46%) of pet owners plan to hang stockings filled with goodies for their pets, while the same percentage will place gifts under the tree. Two-thirds (59%) will even cook a special Christmas lunch for their pets, with 58% opting for turkey and vegetables. Almost half (48%) will go the extra mile and set a place for their pets at the family table.
The festive spending doesn’t stop there—UK pet owners are splurging an average of £77 per pet, filling stockings with an average of eight gifts. Popular presents include edible treats (69%), squeaky toys (43%), and chew toys (32%), alongside stuffed toys, collars, new outfits, and cosy blankets.
For some pets, Christmas is also about experiences, with 9% enjoying a walk to their favourite spot and 6% receiving a pampering trip to the groomer.
Neil Rogers from M&S Pet Insurance said:
“Christmas is a time to treat the ones we love and show them how much they mean to us, so it’s great to see that so many pets, who bring us so much joy day-to-day, will be included in the festivities.”
However, festive cheer can sometimes lead to chaos. Two-thirds (66%) of pet owners have experienced a “pet-related disaster” during the holidays, including knocked-over Christmas trees (41%), unwrapped presents (37%), and stolen food (36%). Alarmingly, 12% have had to rush their pets to the vet for emergencies, such as eating chocolates or other hazardous items.
Despite these risks, a quarter (25%) of pet owners don’t have insurance, leaving them vulnerable to unexpected vet bills. Neil Rogers added:
“Taking out insurance – and selecting a policy that’s right for you and your pet – can provide peace of mind for pet owners. This is especially worth considering at this time of year, when there are often more potential pet hazards around the home.”
