Skipton Building Society marked Armistice Day on 11th November with a moving service and light display at its Bailey Head Office, paying tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community.
Colleagues including Gwyn Burr, Chair of the Board, Stuart Haire, Group Chief Executive, David Travis, Group General Counsel and Company Secretary, and Bobby Sharp, Security Lead, took part in the service. Attendees then joined a procession outside, where the building was lit in tribute and a bugler performed a poignant musical tribute. Guests finished the evening with refreshments and cakes.
The event reflects Skipton’s long-standing commitment to supporting veterans, reservists, and military families. Earlier this year, the Society received the Gold Award from the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme for its work supporting the Armed Forces and mentoring organisations like Delkia through the Armed Forces Covenant.

A wide range of local and military dignitaries attended, including Mrs Johanna Ropner, Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, representatives from the Royal British Legion, RAFAC Cadets, the Royal Gunners – 5th Regiment Royal Artillery, local councillors, Veteran Commander Paul Blythe, Lieutenant Colonel Jim Dowle, and members of the Reserve Forces and Cadets’ Associations. Members of the local community and Skipton colleagues also joined the commemoration.
Gwyn Burr, Chair of the Board at Skipton Group, commented:
“As an organisation, Skipton Building Society recognises the unique skills and experiences that veterans and reservists bring to the workplace. Their leadership, resilience and teamwork enrich our culture and strengthen our performance. That’s why we are committed to being a forces-friendly employer, not just in words, but in action.
“We continue to build pathways for veterans to thrive in civilian careers, and we actively support reservists in balancing their dual roles. We are proud to stand alongside our Armed Forces community through the Armed Forces Covenant — a promise that those who serve, and their families, will be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy, and workplaces they are part of.”
