Families can travel back nearly 2,000 years this October half term at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, as it presents Roman Tales, a week of live performances, hands-on activities, and adventures inspired by Roman and gladiatorial life.
Running from Saturday 25th October to Sunday 2nd November, the event is part of the museum’s Gladiators series, linked to the exhibition Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum, which runs until 2nnd November.
Live Action Every Day
The museum’s interpreters will perform six shows daily, bringing ancient Rome to life with dramatic storytelling and authentic combat demonstrations. Highlights include:
- Combat: Gladiators! (Daily) – Witness two gladiators clash and decide who claims victory.
- Combat: Roman v Celt (Daily) – See a legendary battle between two warrior cultures with sword, shield, and spear.
- Steel and Stripes (25th – 27th & 31st Oct, 1st – 2nd Nov) – Meet a gladiator and his four-legged opponent in a drop-in demonstration.
- Androcles and the Tiger (28th – 30th Oct) – Enjoy a puppet show retelling the Roman tale of friendship and courage.
Family Fun Throughout the Museum
Visitors can also take part in creative crafts and exploration trails:
- Animals of the Armouries Trail – Pick up a free family trail to discover the animals hidden in the museum’s galleries.
- Craft Activities – Drop in between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to create a gladiator helmet or a Roman mosaic.
