The Iconic Sweet-Themed Street Festival Taking Over a Yorkshire Town Next Month

The iconic Pontefract Liquorice Festival is fast approaching, with extensive preparations now underway for the return of one of West Yorkshire’s most celebrated and unique community events.

Taking place on Sunday 12th July 2026, the annual festival will once again bring together thousands of residents, local groups, and visitors from across the region to celebrate Pontefract’s famous liquorice heritage and proud sweet-making tradition.

Returning as the headline sponsor for the third consecutive year, confectionery giant HARIBO UK will be on hand to share its iconic Pontefract Cakes and join festivalgoers for the day-long celebration.

This year’s event puts the local community at the absolute centre of the festivities, with schools, regional organisations, and community groups helping bring the town to life through a much-loved street parade, creative competitions, and interactive activities. Among those taking part in the parade are the local roller derby club, the Wakey Wheeled Cats, who are set to showcase two giant, custom liquorice-themed roller skates.

Beyond the parade, visitors can explore more than 50 colourful market stalls showcasing local and regional produce, artisan food and drink, and handcrafted goods. The town centre will also feature live entertainment, street performances, and live music throughout the day.

Making a highly anticipated return is HARIBO’s iconic mascot, Goldbear. For the third year running, Goldbear will join the official parade route, greeting fans as the procession moves from the Town Hall all the way to the historic Pontefract Castle.

Tabea Powell, Head of Communications at HARIBO UK, said: “The Pontefract Liquorice Festival is a fantastic celebration of West Yorkshire and its unique sweet-making heritage. What makes the event so special is the role local people play in bringing it to life. As a proud Yorkshire business that has called this region our home for more than 50 years, we’re proud to support an event that celebrates this shared heritage.”

Cllr Lukasz Borcz, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Sport, added: “Pontefract Liquorice Festival is a great day out for all the family to enjoy. There will be lots going on with street entertainment and colourful market stalls, alongside live music. The festival is also a fantastic opportunity to visit many of our amazing local, independent businesses, many of whom will be selling treats with a liquorice twist.”
