Wave on the Wacky Racers at Bridlington’s Super Soapbox Challenge this Sunday

This Sunday, 20 fearless teams will be taking part in the wacky downhill cart races on Bridlington’s South Marine Drive.

Funded by the Yorkshire Coast BID to support with boosting visitors to the area, the teams will be putting their very own Soapbox cart builds to the test, all in hope of being crowned Super Soapbox Champions! This is a free to attend community event.

Not only will the quickest recorded time go home with the trophy, awards are also up for grabs for the ‘Most Innovative Cart Design’, ‘Best Turned-out Soapbox Crew’ and ‘Joker of the Day’.

Racing will commence at 11am from the starting ramp on South Marine Drive, with the event finishing at 5pm.

As well as putting on a spectacle for visitors, the aim of the event is to raise money for a variety of charities and schools, with proceeds going to Bridlington RNLI, Yorkshire Air Ambulance and more.

The RNLI and Yorkshire Air Ambulance will be using any money raised to continue its invaluable work in helping to save lives off the coast around Bridlington, and across the county. As an added bonus, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance will also bring with them its helicopter simulator trailer, offering a state-of-the-art educational experience for the Soapbox visitors.

Andrew Pearson, events marketing director at the organisers, The Super Soapbox Challenge Company, said: “There’s a real sense of excitement building up now, with teams working hard on building and refining their weird and wonderful racing machines for what we’re certain will be a really fun-packed and enjoyable day out for the family.”

Commenting on the event, Yorkshire Coast BID Chair, Clive Rowe-Evans, added: “East Riding of Yorkshire Council have been a great support in setting up this fantastic event. Bridlington provides a great backdrop for the Super Soapbox, and it’s the perfect opportunity to showcase why people should visit the town and its surrounding area.”

Councillor Jane Evison, portfolio holder for economic growth, investment and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, concluded: “We are delighted to offer our full support to the Super Soapbox Challenge event coming to Bridlington. Around 20,000 people are expected to be attracted to the free event and that is fantastic news for tourism in the East Riding. I would encourage any families looking for things to do in the local area to come to Bridlington and get involved in the event.”
