Whitby Maritime Training Hub Reaches Final Stages as Roof and Solar Panels Installed

A multi-million pound scheme to boost skills and economic growth on the North Yorkshire coast has reached a key milestone with the completion of the roof at the new Whitby Maritime Training Hub.

The flagship facility on Endeavour Wharf has also had 104 solar panels installed. Most exterior construction and brickwork are now in place, keeping the £10 million project on track for completion in April next year.

The centre will offer dedicated space for maritime training, business research and development, and workshops aimed at supporting apprentices and skilled professionals. The project aims to enhance Whitby’s long-term economic prospects by creating sustainable career opportunities in the maritime sector.

Cllr Mark Crane, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for open to business, said the development will help protect Whitby’s future and attract further investment to the coast.

Construction, led by Willmott Dixon, has already created five local jobs, including two roles for individuals previously not in education, employment or training, and three positions through supply chain partners. The project has also delivered 153 apprenticeship weeks and additional on-site work experience placements.

Chris Yates, Yorkshire director at Willmott Dixon, said the company is proud to support opportunities for Whitby residents as the build enters its final stages.

The scheme has been funded mainly through Whitby’s £17.1 million allocation from the Government’s Town Deals programme, supplemented by council reserves.

North Yorkshire councillors Neil Swannick and Phil Trumper have welcomed the progress, highlighting the hub’s potential to diversify the town’s economy and support young people.

The council is currently in discussions with potential tenants in training, research and enterprise sectors.
