York locals are being encouraged to explore their city in a new way during this year’s York Residents’ Weekend, taking place from 24th to 26th January. The Association of Voluntary Guides to the City of York (AVG), which has been offering free guided tours since 1951, is inviting residents to join one of its twice-daily tours and consider becoming a guide themselves.
The two-hour tours, available at 10:30 am and 1:15 pm each day, start at the William Etty Statue in front of York City Art Gallery and conclude at Whip-ma-Whop-Ma-Gate. These walks offer a rich overview of York’s history and landmarks, and for many, they are an introduction to the joy of guiding.
Melvyn Neale, chairman of the AVG, said: “People joining us don’t already need to be an expert on York. If they are enthusiastic about sharing our beautiful city with visitors, we will provide them with all the information they need. It’s an opportunity to meet people from all around the world and, as I’m sure all our volunteers would testify, it is a very satisfying experience to deliver our tours.”
The association is seeking new volunteers to join its team and take part in a training course in spring 2025. The course includes four weeks of desk-based learning, followed by a practical guiding session.
Those interested in attending a tour during Residents’ Weekend can book online at www.avgyork.co.uk or by searching for “York Free Tour” on Eventbrite.
Whether you’re looking to gain deeper knowledge of York’s history, meet people from around the world, or simply share your enthusiasm for the city, the AVG’s invitation offers a unique opportunity to get involved and give back to the local community.
