The Milner York is marking one year since its rebrand with a week-long celebration that pays tribute to the city’s railway heritage and wartime history.
The landmark hotel on Station Road, formerly The Principal, first opened its doors in 1878. In 2024, it was renamed The Milner York in honour of William Milner, a station foreman who lost his life during the Baedeker raid of April 1942 while retrieving medical supplies from a burning building. The hotel now carries his name as a lasting tribute to his courage.
During Milner Week, guests and visitors are invited to step back in time for a taste of 1940s York. The celebrations include birthday cocktail offers, vintage parlour games in the lobby, and a Full Chocolate Afternoon Tea with surprise gifts ranging from Milner-inspired G&Ts to handmade chocolate treats.
The highlight of the week will be a one-night-only 1940s Anniversary Evening on Friday 17th. The event features a drinks reception, a bespoke three-course dinner, live swing music from That Old Swing Thing, and a few surprises along the way.

The first year since rebranding has been one of growth and renewed energy for The Milner York. Staff development has been a key focus, with retention rates rising from 57% in 2023 to 80% in 2024–2025. Service quality scores have also improved by 30%, with arrival and departure experiences rating highly in guest reviews.
Front-of-house teams have driven additional revenue through tailored upselling, while the Meetings & Events department has seen room hire bookings grow by 14% year-on-year and revenue increase by 10%.
Victoria Poole, Director of Sales at The Milner York, commented: “The Milner York is more than a hotel, it’s a part of York’s living history. Our first birthday is a chance to reflect on the heritage of our iconic building, to honour the bravery of William Milner, and to bring that spirit to life through a week of 1940s-themed events.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming our local community, loyal guests, and first-time visitors to celebrate with us, whether that’s raising a glass with our birthday cocktails, joining us for the Anniversary Evening, or simply popping in to soak up the atmosphere.”
The hotel’s mix of history, hospitality and celebration makes Milner Week a fitting tribute to both its namesake and its place in York’s story.
