As Christmas approaches, Yorkshire businesses are being urged to remain vigilant against cyber crime, with criminals targeting distracted staff to access critical business data.
Paul Kelly, head of cyber services at Azets, which has offices in Leeds, Bradford, and York, said:
“While many businesses and individuals are preparing for festive celebrations, exchanging Secret Santa gifts and winding down for the season, cyber criminals are gearing up for one of their busiest periods of the year. Reduced staff numbers, increased online activity, and the general distraction of the period make organisations more vulnerable.”

Azets, a top 10 UK accountancy and business advisory firm, warns that attacks could include theft of payroll information, customer details, and other sensitive business data. Recent high-profile attacks on Marks & Spencer, Co-op, Jaguar Land Rover, and Harrods highlight the growing sophistication of cyber crime.
Sajid Ghufoor, head of Azets’ tax investigations and dispute resolution service, added:
“Last year, we exposed a highly convincing bogus HMRC compliance letter that criminals used to commit fraud, including taking out loans in the names of directors and opening up VAT fraud opportunities. This shows why vigilance is essential, especially during busy periods like Christmas.”
Common cyber tactics to watch out for
- Fake e-commerce websites designed to steal payment details
- Malicious emails impersonating delivery companies or retailers
- Social media scams offering deals that seem too good to be true
Steps SMEs can take to stay safe
- Remind staff to stay alert and report suspicious activity
- Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication
- Scan networks and applications for vulnerabilities
- Check incident response plans and update them if necessary
- Keep software updated and install security patches promptly
- Perform regular backups and maintain offsite copies
With distractions and reduced staffing during the festive season, Azets stresses the importance of preparation and vigilance to protect businesses from costly digital attacks.
