You’ll find a great number of things to do in Thirsk, so if you’re in the area for a holiday, short break or are looking for something to do this weekend, you can make the most of this fantastic place.

There’s a great variety of fun in Thirsk, ranging from the great outdoors, which won’t cost you a penny to fantastic places to visit with a partner. From enjoying the surrounding countryside to hitting the famous racecourse for a flutter, you’ll find loads of great things to do in Thirsk, to keep you busy whilst you visit, no matter what time of year! There are also some great places to eat in Thirsk.

Thirsk’s position on the edge of the North York Moors National Park makes it the ideal location for exploring, and what better way than to do it by horseback. The trekking centre is found on a working farm in Boltby, a short distance from Thirsk. They have all kinds of horses and ponies to suit every experience level. Rides range from half an hour mini-rides to one and two-hour treks. Treks are very reasonable, starting at £12 for a “mini-trek” to £40 for a two-hour ride.

Thirsk Museum

Anyone with an interest in history should head down to Thirsk Museum. There you’ll find an exhibition on the history of Thirsk, within the former home of Thomas Lord, founder of Lord’s Cricket Ground. There are rooms brimming with exhibits featuring local industry, cricketing, farming equipment, furniture, toys and much more. You’ll learn about the bones of their Saxon Giant and the legend of the Busby Stoop Chair. Admission is free.

The World of James Herriot

The World of James Herriot is a wonderful exhibition which is one of Yorkshire biggest attractions. It exhibits the life and work of James “Alf” Wight who was a legendary local vet whose book enchanted millions and are still read all over the plant. Found within a beautifully restored 1940s house and surgery, it’s open all year round and is perhaps the most popular of all the things to do in Thirsk. Here you can experience what it was like to be a vet and can even try your hand at acting on a mock-up studio set from the TV programme All Creatures Great and Small.

St Mary’s Church

The church dates back to the 15th century and is a popular attraction for its internal architecture, intriguing stain glass windows and the countless character features, which take you back over the centuries since it was built. Although it’s been restored a number of times it’s still one of the most characterful church’s you’ll see.

Sutton Bank National Park

Sutton Bank National Park

Sutton Bank National Park Centre is a great way to spend a fun, free day out. There are some of England’s finest walking trails, with the popular White Horse and fantastic bike rides on over the hills. You can hire a bike all year round and there are cycling routes suited for riders of all experiences. It’s an area famous for its beautiful views, and natural adventure play areas, with quirky treehouses, a stone castle and magical stone roundhouses. Perfect for a day out with the kids!

Thirsk Market

Thirsk Market

Thirsk market takes place on Monday and Saturday in the town centre. There you’ll find a range of local produce and other stalls. The great agriculture in the surrounding areas make it a destination for anyone looking for fresh and high quality produce. It’s a great place to peruse for an hour or two and pick up something tasty!

The White Horse of Kilburn

White Horse

The White Horse was designed by Thomas Taylor a Victorian businessman. It was cut in to the hillside in 1857, Taylor had seen chalk cut figures during his travels in southern England and was set upon creating something similar in his home. The White Horse is 314ft long and 228ft high and is a marvellous sight, well worth the trip if you’re in the area. Interestingly, the horse was covered during World War II to avoid it becoming a target for German bombers.

Thirsk Racecourse

Situated in the market town of Thirsk, Thirsk Racecourse facilities have benefited from massive investment in recent years and is considered one of the best racecourses in the UK. There are many meets each year and guests can enjoy all kinds of experiences, from fine dining to casual fish & chips in the James Herriot Hall. There really is something for every preference and price range.

Described as one of Yorkshire best kept secrets, the Zillah Bell Gallery was establish in 1988 and has since gained a reputation as a place to buy a rang of art by artists from across the world. The exhibitions change every month, promoting established and emerging artists. The forms of art are just as eclectic as the artists behind them.

Lark Edge Alpacas

Lark Edge Alpaca’s

Lark Edge is home to four alpacas and an ever increasing herd of goats. They welcome guests to walk their Alpacas and get up close and personal with these fascinating animals. There are a number of options for guests, although all visits must be booked in advance.
