On Sunday 16 March 2025, the National Science and Media Museum’s Pictureville Cinema will host a rare screening of This Is Cinerama (1952), presented in its original three-strip Cinerama format. As the only public venue in the world showcasing this unique experience, Pictureville Cinema provides an exceptional opportunity to witness one of cinema’s most pioneering achievements as it was meant to be seen.

Directed by Mike Todd, This Is Cinerama introduced audiences to the revolutionary Cinerama process. Using three synchronised projectors on a curved screen, the format expands the film’s aspect ratio, engaging the audience’s peripheral vision for an immersive viewing experience. The film features breathtaking scenes from locations such as Venice and Niagara Falls, demonstrating the now rarely experienced technology.

Following the screening, attendees will have the chance to join an exclusive tour of Pictureville’s world-class projection facilities. Led by the cinema’s expert projectionists, the tour will provide insights into the ground-breaking process behind Cinerama and the rich history of Pictureville itself. Located in the heart of Bradford, UNESCO City of Film, Pictureville is the largest independent cinema in Yorkshire and home to Europe’s first IMAX screen. It remains a key destination for film enthusiasts and visitors alike.
Later in the year, Pictureville will also host the 29th edition of its annual Widescreen Weekend film festival from 25 – 29 September. The festival celebrates large-screen formats and bold cinematic experiences through specially curated programming and events. Further details on the festival, including ticketing and programme announcements, will be available on the museum’s website and social media channels in the coming months.
