Home to the delicious Beacon Farm Ice Cream, Beacon Farm campsite is family-friendly and reasonably priced. The pitches here are well spaced out so tents are not crammed together. This leaves ample room for children to play safely near the tent when they’re not clambering over the play equipment at the on-site play area. With a little playground, a bouncy castle and a cafe serving some of the best traditional ice creams in Yorkshire, this one is great for kids! It’s one of the most family-focused Whitby campsites and they don’t tolerate raucous late-night behaviour. Always a bonus when you have little ones to think of. Popular holiday park, Northcliffe, is situated between Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay. It’s essentially a family-friendly park with static caravans for hire, but it also offers seasonal touring pitches between March and November. Their all-weather gravel pitches vary in size and all include a WIFI package plus use of some of their excellent on-site amenities, including the outdoor gym and games area. The pitches here are incredibly popular so they operate a waiting list system. It’s best to apply well in advance to avoid missing out.

Bay Ness Farm

Set on the North West side of Robin Hood’s Bay, this hilltop campsite offers breathtaking views across the bay and towards Ravenscar. With wonderful scenic walks right on the doorstep and Whitby only a 10 minute drive away, this camp provides a holiday combining the best of the area’s countryside and seaside. The facilities here are minimal but excellent nonetheless. The real selling point for this campsite is its quiet and relaxed atmosphere which ensures campers can enjoy a truly tranquil holiday in stunning surroundings.

White Linen

This beautifully renovated Georgian townhouse was built in 1785 and is a Grade II listed ship builder’s residence. Just a stone’s throw from the the stunning Pannett Park, this magnificent property offers 4 immaculately decorated guest rooms and a loft bedroom.

Classically furnished to complement the history and character of the house, each room is luxurious, spacious and comfortable. At White Linen, it is room-only accommodation but you won’t have to walk far to find breakfast at one of Whitby’s many excellent cafes. Ideally situated in walking distance of Whitby’s most-loved hotspots, the apartment can comfortably accommodate 4 guests within it’s luxuriously decorated rooms. The Ropery

Nestled on the East Cliff and overlooking the town, this property is beautifully decorated with neutral colours and high quality furniture to provide a luxurious feel throughout. The Ropery can sleep six people across three bedrooms, each of which either has its own ensuite or access to the luxury bathroom, featuring a stunning corner bath and two luxury steam saunas. The spacious living area has a whopping 55″ TV for those cosy nights in and the sleek dining area with beamed ceiling is ideal for an evening of eating and drinking!

The interior of this property cannot be faulted but it is the exterior of the property which really makes it stand out from the rest. Boasting unrivalled panoramic views over the River Esk from the outdoor decking area and private hot tub, this is a wonderful choice for a relaxing family getaway.

Thistlebank Townhouse

Thistlebank is a private Georgian townhouse with 6 bedrooms in one of the most distinguished areas of Whitby. The house dates back to 1801 and has been refurbished and furnished to the very highest of standards. For large parties seeking luxurious accommodation with a “boutique” feel, Thistlebank Townhouse will surely tick every box.

This gorgeous property can sleep 12 guests and has onsite parking for three vehicles – which is something of a rarity for a self-catering property in Whitby. The bedrooms are all situated on the first and second floors and the groundfloor is home to the stunning and spacious communal areas. On the ground floor, you’ll find a dining room with opulent ornamental fireplace, a large kitchen with additional dining space, a large sitting room and a separate games room. For large parties, the games room is no doubt a much-loved feature with its pool table, dartboard, selection of board games and cosy log burner.

Gutsy Gingers

Despite being tucked away on Brunswick Street, Gutsy Gingers cannot be missed with its colourful shop front and quirky window displays. Opened in 2003 with just 39 items of stock, it is now an Aladdin’s cave of beautiful handcrafted jewellery, clothing, furniture, homeware and gifts sourced from all around the globe.

Inspired by her time spent working as a Henna Artist, the incredibly creative owner, Leisha, mainly stocks items from countries where Henna holds its routes. Step through the doors of Gutsy Gingers and enter a colourful treasure trove of exotic goods made by talented crafters from places such as Turkey, Egypt, Morocco and India. Whitby is indeed lucky enough to have plenty of wonderful independent gift shops but this is certainly the place to go if you’re after something a little different. We particularly love their handmade paper notebooks which wouldn’t look out of place at Hogwarts! They also stock a beautiful selection of sterling silver jewellery.

W H Hamond

Established way back in the year 1860, WH Hamond is the original Whitby Jet shop. They gather the finest Whitby Jet from the town’s shoreline and expertly cut, polish and set it into the most magnificent pieces of unique jewellery.

Located on Church Street at the foot of the 199 steps, W H Hamond is also home to The Whitby Jet Museum. Housed on the first floor, the museum offers a fascinating insight into the history and geology of Whitby Jet, as well as its spectacular transformation into the fine pieces of jewellery made and sold onsite.

Although famous for their Whitby Jet, this wonderful jewellers on Whitby’s most visited street, also sells a sparkling range of diamond and precious gemstone jewellery. If you’re heading to Whitby to pop that special question or you want to find a glittering memento of your time here, W H Hamond is certainly worth a visit.

The Whitby Bookshop

Another gem of a shop on Church Street is The Whitby Book Shop. Opened in 1985, this quirky old shop with its twisting staircase houses over 10,000 books. With such a vast and varied selection of titles to choose from, you’re bound to find something to suit your taste in literature. If you can’t find exactly what you are looking for, their friendly and knowledgable team can advise you on the whopping 13 million titles they have available to order for next day delivery. We suggest picking up a copy of Bram Stoker’s Dracula before making your way u the nearby 199 steps to the famous abbey ruins.

If you’re local to the area, take advantage of their loyalty scheme which offers regular customers discounts on future purchases. If books aren’t your thing, The Whitby Bookshop is still worth a visit as they also stock some wonderful unique gifts.

Artemis and The Mermaid

One of Whitby’s quirkiest little shops, Artmeis and The Mermaid stocks a beautiful selection of handmade jewellery and gifts. Inspired by, sourced from or created in Whitby itself, the products here are wonderfully unique and make the perfect holiday souvenirs or gifts for loved ones. You’ll find the shop on Flowergate but if you cannot get there, their products are also available to order online.

As the name suggests, the shop has a nautical theme and you certainly won’t struggle to find pirate, mermaid or sealife themed items crafted by talented makers. They stock eveyrthing from handknitted toys and pretty handmade cards to stunning natural crystals and an eclectic range of trinkets and treasures. There really is an abundance of unique items here that you would be hard pushed to find elsewhere.

Whitby Deli

This shop is an absolute must-visit for those on self-catering breaks in the town. In addition to their wonderful cafe serving delicious hot and cold treats, they boast an impressive selection of excellent Yorkshire produce. Here, you’ll find locally produced sweet and savoury treats, artisan chocolates, Yorkshire gins, store cupboard essentials and their very own award-winning range of chutneys, jams and preserves. It’s the little things that make holidaying in the UK that extra bit special so head to Whitby Deli on Flowergate and stock up on yummy Yorkshire treats for your caravan, cottage kitchen or picnic on the beach.

The produce stocked here is really good and you can stop for a coffee and a bite to eat before you browse the shelves. They also hold quite a diverse range of gluten free products including pork pies which are an essential element of a British picnic!

The White Rabbit

This Alice in Wonderland themed gift shop on Skinner Street offers a fun shopping experience for the whole family. Step through the doors and be transported into the wacky and wonderful imagination of Lewis Carroll. The famous author was particularly fond of the Yorkshire seaside town and frequently holidayed here during his lifetime. Whitby’s connection to the literary great no doubt inspired the name and theme of this lovely shop, which is stacked high with treasures that wouldn’t look out of place in one of the most famous fantasy worlds.

You’ll find all sorts of shabby chic and fairytale treasures at The White Rabbit, including clothing, jewellery, furniture and homeware. If you, like so many us us, have a fondess for Alice and the colourful charcters she meets on her adventures then you’ll undoubtedly fall in love with their window displays.

Fortune’s Kippers

No visit to Whitby would be complete without popping into the famous Fortune’s Kippers smokehouse and shop. Established in 1872 by William Fortune, it is Whitby’s only traditional smokehouse. They’ve been smoking kippers for over 139 years in this building on Henrietta Street and the distinctive aroma from Fortune Kippers is apparent as you approach. If you’re a fan of this fishy breakfast staple, then it’s certain to tempt your tastebuds.

As it is the only traditional smokehouse and is still run by the very same family who established it all those years ago, this is by far the best place to get smoked kippers in Whitby. Still gutted by hand and smoked in the traditional way, these large North-east Atlantic herring are the perfect way to kick-start a day exploring this delightful coastal town.

At Totally Natural Skincare, you’ll find an enormous selection of carefully, and expertly created products with a range of benefits. The majority of their products are vegan-friendly, except for a few which contain beeswax, and their plastic packaging is 100% biodegradable. If you’re opting to holiday in the UK this year then Whitby has plenty to offer. It’s packed with quirky independent shops, excellent restaurants, traditional pubs, and the local attractions offer a great insight into the town’s famous past residents.

There are plenty of great hotels and bed and breakfasts in the area, but if you’re planning a longer break or prefer to cater for yourself, then a holiday cottage is the ideal option. You’ll find no shortage of quaint little cottages lining the cobbled streets of Whitby and they all offer something a little different. However, we wanted to let you know about one particular cottage that we think ticks every box.

Last week, we were lucky enough to spend a week at Columbo Cottage and we couldn’t fault a thing. Columbo is one of three new builds, owned by Heather and Ian Vitty of Vitty’s Cottages. The properties were built on the site of Whitby’s old police station and courthouse, which was erected in 1877 and demolished 46 years ago. When Ian and Heather bought the land, it was being used as a carpark so they deemed it to be the ideal location for three new holiday properties with a central location and onsite parking. They weren’t wrong either! The cottages are just a short stroll away from the harbour and main attractions.

As they were built on the site of the former police station, the Vittys decided to name their new properties Columbo, Sherlock and Morse. Sherlock is a slightly bigger property which was extended to include a games room and cinema area, but Morse and Columbo (where we stayed) are both very similar in size and layout.

When you first enter Columbo Cottage, you’ll find yourself in a bright hallway facing the carpeted stairs. To your left, you’ll find a space to store shoes and hang coats. To the right, is the door to the beautifully decorated open plan living area and kitchen. With solid wood floors, modern decor and plenty of comfortable seating, it’s certainly the area where you will spend most of your time. There’s also a downstairs toilet which we found really handy, having a five-year-old son who only remembers he needs to go at the very last minute!

The kitchen area has dining space for 6, top quality appliances and is stocked with everything you could need for preparing a tasty home-cooked meal. They have even provided a coffee machine with complimentary pods, a Nutriblend, a slow cooker, tin foil and cling film, tupperware, dishwasher tablets and washing up liquid. The coffee, tea and sugar jars are all filled before you arrive and you’ll find milk in the fridge and plenty of ice in the freezer.

In the adjoining utility area, you’ll also find a cupboard next to the washer/dryer which is packed with outdoor dining equipment and cool bag for those picnics on the beach or brunches on the small outdoor patio to the rear. If that isn’t enough to convince you of their exceptional standard of hospitality, then the welcome pack provided sure will! We were greeted with a wooden crate packed with goodies such as crisps, chocolate, local biscuits, bottles of water and a bottle of bubbly!

Ian and Heather really have thought of everything. The property itself is immaculate throughout and most would be satisfied with that alone. However, the little extras they have thrown in really made our stay that little bit more special. Local guides, books and games for children and a selection of DVDs can all be found in the living area so there’s plenty to keep you entertained if you can’t find anything to watch on the smart TV provided.

There are three comfortable bedrooms at Columbo cottage – 2 doubles and 1 twin. Each is tastefully decorated with plain walls, pretty soft furnishings and good quality furniture. You’ll find two of the bedrooms on the first floor. The twin room is right next to the main house bathroom and the first floor double is ensuite. Go up another flight of stairs and you’ll find the main bedroom which covers the entire top floor. This stunning bedroom is ensuite with a double shower and, as you would expect, it’s really spacious. It also offers superb views across the harbour towards the famous abbey ruins.

Ian and Heather are experienced holiday property owners so it’s no wonder they have provided everything you could possibly think of to make your stay in Whitby as comfortable as possible. They bought their very first holiday let back in 2011 and are now the proud owners of 8 properties in Whitby and 1 in nearby Sandsend. They’ve really put their heart and soul into these new properties and, as they are local, are always on hand should you need anything. A friendly, approachable couple with a passion for hospitality and a genuine love of Whitby, they make the perfect hosts. They’ve been residents of the town for a number of years but still thoroughly enjoy all it has to offer.

We asked Heather what she would do if she only had one day to spend in Whitby:

” I would definitely walk up Church Street to look in the shops before climbing the 199 steps up to look around St Mary’s Church and Whitby Brewery. From up this end, I would jump on the yellow tour bus to see all the wonderful sights before hopping off at West Cliff for a game of crazy golf at Arnold Palmer’s. I would then head down the cliff and take a stroll along the beach towards the town centre where I’d end the day with fish & chips from Trenchers or Fisherman’s Wife.”

With so much beautiful countryside to explore and many beaches allowing dogs on them, your UK holiday can be even more enjoyable when you can share the experience with your dog. Unfortunately, finding accommodation that will allow dogs can be tricky. Hotels are ruled out completely and your only option is to go self-catering. This beautifully presented holiday apartment is part of a Grade II listed Sea Captain’s house. With a central location and magnificent views of Whitby Abbey, the luxury property is the perfect base for couples or small families wishing to explore this popular coastal town. Spyglass 1708 is set over three floors with stylish country-chic decor throughout and two spacious, comfortable bedrooms. There’s no outdoor space with the property but the beach is just a short distance away.

Columbo Cottage

This newly-built and immaculately decorated property was built on the site of the old police station in the centre of Whitby and opens for bookings in March. Located in a quiet residential area close to the harbour, shops and attractions, it has three comfortable bedrooms, three bath / shower rooms, an enclosed outdoor space and private parking. Cobble Cottage

A stylish yet homely property arranged over three floors, Cobble Cottage is perfect for small families or couples. Situated near West Cliff and the famous ‘Whale Bones’, it offers wonderful coastal views and is just a few minutes’ walk away from the centre. There’s also a lovely courtyard garden area so you can enjoy a spot of al fresco dining on those warmer evenings.  There’s no private parking here but parking scratch cards are provided for 24/7 on-street parking. Two dogs are welcome for a supplement of £30 each.

Low Tide

Low Tide is one of two apartments set in a converted Victorian property, approximately five minutes’ walk away from the cobbled streets and popular attractions of Whitby. This apartment has one spacious double bedroom,  a light and airy open plan living area,  a well-equipped kitchen and a contemporary bathroom. Simple, yet stylish and very reasonably priced, Low Tide is bound to provide couples (and one well behaved dog) with a wonderfully romantic break in this glorious Yorkshire seaside town.

Paddock Cottage

This charming cottage dates back to the early 17th century and the owners have done their utmost to preserve some of the original features. Its central location means the harbour, beach, shops and restaurants are just a five minute walk away. Cosy and welcoming, Paddock Cottage has two double bedrooms and a single room so it can accommodate 5 guests. Dog owners will be delighted to learn that this is a completely dog friendly property. There’s no charge for bringing your furry friends and the owners have even provided a treasure chest of goodies in the lounge area containing leads, bowls, bags, toys and yummy treats.

Kirkby House

Kirkby House offers magnificent views due to its idyllic elevated position beside Whitby Harbour. The semi-detached cottage is set over four floors with modern furnishings and contemporary decor in every room. Steps from the property lead directly down to the centre of Whitby with it’s quaint cobbled streets, bustling port and excellent pubs and restaurants. Kirkby House can accommodate 5 guests and one well behaved dog.

Waterloo Place

Waterloo Place is a 2 bedroom ground floor apartment in the centre of Whitby. There are just three steps into the property and everything else is one one level – ideal for families with small children or those with walking difficulties. This property has a double bedroom and twin bedroom so it accommodates 4 guests. It also has its own private patio area which can be accessed from both bedrooms via french doors. Only one dog is permitted at Waterloo Place but there is no extra charge for this.

The Captain’s Hideaway

A tastefully decorated terraced property set over five floors, The Captain’s Hideaway boasts eye level views of the famous abbey. With three large bedrooms, this gorgeous Georgian cottage with traditional interiors and preserved original features sleeps 7 guests. It’s a delightful property and ideal for large families or groups of friends. The bedroom on the 5th level features patio doors which open out onto a lovely rooftop terrace which is perfect for enjoying that morning coffee or drinks in the evening. Guests may bring one well behaved dog but please note that the small walled yard area is unsuitable for larger dogs.

Bram’s Lair

Bram’s Lair is a lovely 2-bedroom apartment on the ground floor of a stunning Georgian house, which is supposedly where Bram Stoker stayed whilst writing his famous Dracula. Well-equipped and stylishly decorated, this spacious apartment offers magnificent views over Crescent Gardens and out to sea. It’s also just a short walking distance away from the cobbled streets and historic attractions of central Whitby. You can bring one dog with you to Bram’s Lair for a charge of £25 per stay.

Kingfisher

Kingfisher is a three bedroom converted stone barn, just over half a mile from the bustling seaside town. The property has a floor-to-ceiling windows making it feel incredibly light and airy inside. The open plan living area features comfortable leather sofas, luxury stone flooring and cosy woodburners for those chillier evenings. Each bedroom is en-suite and there’s a lovely enclosed patio which is great for dining outdoors or lapping up the summer sun. Guests at Kingfisher are welcome to take two dogs.

Robin’s Rest

A spacious and tastefully decorated ground floor apartment, Robin’s Rest is perfect for a romantic getaway by the sea. The quaint little apartment in the centre of Whitby has one double bedroom, a well equipped kitchen / dining area, comfortable living room with all the latest tech gadgets and a small courtyard area with seating. You’re welcome to take one dog with you to Robin’s Rest and its central location means there are some excellent dog friendly walks right on the doorstep.
