The perfect ‘Back to the 80s’ day out in Wakefield

An era known for the explosion of classic pop culture, blockbuster movies, big hair, bold style and spandex, it’s no wonder the 80s is many people’s favourite decade.

Whether you want to take a trip down memory lane, or see what it felt like to live in this vibrant decade, the Wakefield district ticks all the boxes for a perfect back to the 80s experience…

Light it up with neon

Bold colours and neon lights are quintessentially 80s, and Wakefield’s Neon Workshops gives you the opportunity to design your own neon art piece. Whether you fancy a two-hour taster session, or a full one-day immersive experience, you’ll be able to learn more about neon art, how it’s made, and create your own take-home masterpiece. And if that’s not enough to light up your life, check out CIRCLESPHERE, an exhibition showing work by renowned neon artist Fred Tschida for the first time in Europe at The Art House and Neon Workshops (29th Sep – 28th Nov).

Get your skates on!

Roller skating became super popular in the 80s, so why not give it a go? Get your skates on and roll on down to Fusion Skating. Try out a beginner’s class or, if you’ve already found your footing, check out its regular open skate sessions. You can even hire the rink for your own exclusive skate session, with a smoke machine, disco lights and glow sticks – it’s the ultimate 80s party!

Enjoy an 80s classic film

Known for its blockbuster movies, any 80s day should include delving into some classic cinema. LOT Wakefield is showcasing a range of cult films in its outdoor cinema, providing the ultimate nostalgic movie viewing experience, complete with popcorn and pizza. Ride into the Danger Zone with Top Gun (10th Sep) or go Back to the Future with Marty McFly and Doc Brown (24th Sep) – fancy dress is encouraged!

An 80s bar like no other…

After enjoying one blockbuster, why not try another by picking one up from a VHS shop? Or that’s what it seems… RBT Video is the world’s first VHS (Very Hidden Speakeasy!). Tucked away in the back of what appears to be a local blockbuster shop, guess the movie of the week (or take a look on the website) and be transported into a secret bar. Enjoy an 80s inspired cocktail, cheesy pizza by the slice and one-of-a-kind neon artwork.

Party with a Spandau Ballet legend

And later this year you can go all the way back to the 80s with pop legend Martin Kemp from Spandau Ballet, as he spins all the hits from the decade in a very special DJ set at Castleford Civic Centre on Monday 20th December. Expect huge singalongs and euphoric dance moves, making it a night to remember.

Tickets available from various outlets, including here.
