Fairfax House has teamed up with York Ghost Merchants for this year’s Ghost Week, offering visitors the chance to experience life in 1764 and even win a one-of-a-kind ghost.
Running from 25th October to 2nd November, Fortuna Fatum invites guests into the Georgian townhouse on Castlegate. The Honourable Fairfaxes return to their home, determined to turn their fortunes around, and visitors can take part in puzzles, decipher clues and join a ghost count in one of the historic rooms. Children go free throughout the week.
At the centre of the event is a rare prize. York Ghost Merchants have created a bespoke Celestial Ghost especially for Fairfax House, inspired by an eighteenth-century star chart in the museum’s collection. Anyone who answers all the questions correctly will be entered into a draw, with one winner chosen at random.

Their beautiful creation of the bespoke Celestial Ghost adds something truly magical to our celebrations. Whether by day or by candlelight, visitors will step into the world of the Fairfaxes in 1764 and share in rituals of fortune and fate, with the rare opportunity to win a one-of-a-kind York Ghost.”
There are also three candlelit evenings for those who want a more atmospheric experience. On 27, 29 and 30 October, guests can explore the house after dark, taking part in Georgian entertainments and puzzles while competing for the Celestial Ghost. The first evening is already sold out.
