North Yorkshire Council Proposes Fairer Leisure Memberships for Residents

Residents across North Yorkshire could soon get simpler and fairer access to local leisure and wellbeing hubs if councillors approve a new membership scheme.

Active North Yorkshire, launched in September 2024, supports 19,500 health and fitness members and 6,550 learn-to-swim pupils, helping people stay active and improve physical and mental wellbeing.

On Tuesday, February 3, council executives will consider proposals to replace more than 70 legacy membership types with a consistent, flexible structure. The plan would remove fixed-term contracts and introduce pay-as-you-go options, giving customers greater choice and affordability.

Members could pay monthly by no-contract direct debit or as an annual cash payment. Options would include “swim only” memberships or premium memberships with multi-site access, virtual health care, and on-demand fitness classes. Senior concessions would align with state pension age, while younger residents would continue to receive other eligible discounts. A dedicated wellbeing membership would also be available for individuals referred through specialist programmes.

Virtual activities, including digital fitness guidance and 24/7 online healthcare, would support residents in rural areas. Some memberships may see price increases if rates have not been reviewed for several years, but the council says the changes will provide a fairer and more consistent service across the county.

The proposals form part of a wider investment in North Yorkshire leisure facilities. In November 2025, the council approved £36 million to upgrade gyms, studios, swimming pools, and changing rooms at four key sites in Selby, Skipton, Pickering, and Whitby. An additional £3 million will improve equipment at 12 other leisure centres.

Residents will be contacted directly about any changes if the proposals are approved. Full details are available at North Yorkshire Council eDemocracy
