Whitby Whale Bone Arch Removed Ahead of Bronze Replacement

Whitby’s historic whale bone arch was taken down today following severe coastal erosion, paving the way for a £70,000 ethical bronze replica designed to withstand the town’s harsh seaside environment.

Engineers dismantled the landmark on West Cliff after decades of exposure to North Sea winds and salt air left the real jawbones degraded beyond repair. Installed in 2002 after being gifted by Whitby’s twin town of Barrow, Alaska, the structure taken down was the latest in a series of arches that have stood on West Cliff since 1853.

North Yorkshire Council selected bronze replicas to safeguard the landmark’s scale and appearance while aligning with modern conservation values. The new structure will feature an internal framework cast directly from moulds of the 2002 jawbones and will develop a natural weather patina over time.

“The whale bone arch is one of Whitby’s most treasured landmarks and an important part of the town’s maritime heritage,” said Cllr Mark Crane, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for open to business, whose portfolio includes harbour management. “Importantly, the bronze replicas provide an ethical alternative to the use of whale bones, allowing this iconic landmark and its connection to Whitby’s maritime heritage to be preserved in a way that reflects modern conservation values.”

The £70,000 manufacturing process is underway, with installation scheduled for early next year.

“The whale bone arch means a great deal to residents and visitors alike,” added Whitby Town Mayor, Cllr Sandra Turner. “While it is sad to see the current bones reach the end of their life, the new bronze arch will ensure this landmark continues to celebrate Whitby’s history and provide a focal point on West Cliff for future generations.”
