North Yorkshire has hit a record high for school admissions, with 96% of families securing their first-choice primary school for September 2026. The figure marks an increase from 95 per cent last year and remains significantly higher than the most recent national average of 92.6 per cent.
On National Offer Day (April 16th), families across the county learned where their children will be starting their education journey. Of the 5,137 pupils set to begin primary school this year, 99% were offered a place at one of their top three preferred schools.
North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for education, learning and skills, Cllr Annabel Wilkinson, said:
“Starting school for the first time is such a key milestone and we are pleased that 2026 is a record year for families who applied for primary school places here in North Yorkshire and will see their children going to a school of their choice. It is always our intention to support as many parents as possible with their preferences and this year we have seen outstanding numbers of families successful in gaining admission to the primary school of their choice.”
The council’s corporate director for children and young people’s service, El Mayhew, thanked local schools for their support in ensuring applications were submitted on time, wishing every child a “happy and successful start” to their education.
Following the allocation of places, the council will now review eligibility for free home-to-school transport. Families will be notified of the outcome by Monday, June 15th. Generally, free travel is provided to the nearest suitable school if it is over two miles away for children under eight, or over three miles for those aged eight and up.
For parents with children due to start school in September 2027, the application window will open on October 15th, 2026.
