Leeds-based street artist Nicolas Dixon has returned to Xscape Yorkshire to unveil a vibrant new extension to his massive centre mural.
The new addition, titled Castle in the Sky, builds upon his original 2025 piece, Everything in its Right Place, which was commissioned following the removal of the centre’s famous 12-metre ‘Cas-Vegas cactus’ lift in 2024. Spanning up to the first floor, the updated artwork introduces 17 new elements that blend Dixon’s signature abstract, vivid colours with deep local symbolism.
The new icons pay tribute to Wakefield’s historic mining heritage and regional sports legends, including a poignant inclusion of the number 7 to commemorate the late rugby league icon Rob Burrow. Dixon, whose 15-year career includes global projects in New York and Ibiza alongside iconic local pieces like Leeds United’s Bielsa the Redeemer, consulted directly with local community members and former miners to design the new features.

Speaking with former miners was especially inspiring and influenced elements like the miners’ winding wheel. I hope it will continue to be enjoyed by visitors for many years to come.”
