Families are invited to experience the sights, sounds, and heritage of Yorkshire’s mining history this Yorkshire Day, as the National Coal Mining Museum for England hosts a free grand gala celebration.
Taking place on Saturday, 1st August, the event recreates the vibrant atmosphere of the traditional Miners’ Welfare Galas that were once a highlight of the summer calendar across coalfield communities.
The action-packed day features live brass bands, family stage performances, and creative workshops, including Yorkshire rose making and circus skills. Visitors can also take part in sports day games and garden play activities hosted by The Hepworth Wakefield, and learn about local allotment-growing traditions.
Disability Sport Yorkshire will join the event to run accessible sports sessions, including Boccia and Archery, highlighting the role miners’ welfares played in rehabilitation and wellbeing. The Castleford Tigers Foundation will also offer free rugby skills training while celebrating the deep links between mining communities and rugby league.
Food and drink stalls will offer a wide range of regional treats throughout the site.
The event forms part of Welfares Reimagined, a two-year partnership project between the National Coal Mining Museum, CISWO (the Miners’ Welfare Charity), Spectrum People, Creative Minds, and the Creative Health Hub at the University of Huddersfield. Funded by the Museums Association’s Esmée Fairbairn Communities and Collections Fund, the project explores the lasting legacy of miners’ welfare organisations.
Lynn Dunning, CEO of the National Coal Mining Museum, said: “Miners’ Galas were once the highlight of the summer, bringing communities together to celebrate, socialise and enjoy some well-earned fun. Yorkshire Day felt like the perfect opportunity for the Museum to revive this much-loved tradition and shine a spotlight on everything that makes Yorkshire such a special place.
“We are particularly delighted to be working with community partners on putting on this event. Their involvement reflects the important legacy of the miners’ welfare movement, which supported mining communities in so many ways, including health, wellbeing and rehabilitation through sport.”
In addition to the gala activities, the museum’s regular attractions will be running throughout the day, including underground Caphouse tours led by former miners, horsekeeper talks, the Time Tunnel, and the seaside-themed play beach.
Entry to the museum and the Yorkshire Day Gala is free, with donations welcomed.
