Brunch lovers in York are in for a serious treat this autumn! The team behind Federal, the wildly popular independent café brand inspired by the laid-back neighbourhood coffee spots of Australia and New Zealand, has announced it’s opening a brand-new venue right in the heart of the city.
If you haven’t come across Federal yet, they’ve built up a massive following since starting out in Manchester back in 2014. Known for their standout brunch plates, expertly poured speciality coffee, and their signature ‘Sunny Side Service’ ethos, they were actually named the UK’s most popular independent café (and even ranked fourth globally, boasting over 1.1 million views on TikTok!). After opening their first Yorkshire spot in Leeds late last year, York was the obvious next stop.
The new café is taking over a gorgeous Grade II listed building on Coney Street. The space will seat around 100 guests across two levels, complete with a large outdoor area and room upstairs for private parties and events. The design plans look stunning too – the team is keeping the original brickwork and historic heritage features while bringing in Federal’s signature warm, cosy vibes.
Expect all the fan favourites on the menu alongside regularly changing seasonal specials, with everything made in-house or sourced from top-notch independent suppliers.
“York feels like a natural fit for Federal,” says founder Claudio Ribeiro. “It has a strong independent spirit, a huge student community and a thriving food and drink scene. We’re incredibly lucky to have found a fantastic location, and we’re excited to create something that gives customers everything they know and love about Federal – amazing brunches, top-quality speciality coffee, and five-star service.”
Fit-out work on Coney Street gets underway in late September, with the doors expected to swing open later this autumn.
