The world’s most famous fish and chip brand is returning to its Yorkshire heartland this spring as Harry Ramsden’s prepares to open its doors in Staxton on 2nd May 2026. To celebrate this “symbolic homecoming,” the iconic institution is channelling the spirit of its record-breaking 1952 “Big Fry” by offering free meals to its first customers.
In a creative nod to the classic tradition of fish and chips wrapped in newsprint, the brand has launched The Frying Times, a limited-edition, vintage-style newspaper. Hidden inside is a pull-out voucher that entitles the holder to a free chippy tea at the new Staxton site.

The new restaurant promises a return to tradition, with fish fried in beef dripping, the authentic Northern way, using the brand’s legendary secret-recipe batter. Beyond the food, The Frying Times features local profiles, “fishy” horoscopes, and a nostalgic look back at Harry Ramsden’s humble beginnings in Yorkshire nearly a century ago in 1928.
Mike Mitchinson, Director of Operations, said:
“The opening of the Staxton restaurant represents a symbolic homecoming for Harry Ramsden’s. Yorkshire is where our story began nearly a century ago, and we felt it was only fitting to mark our return by celebrating with the local community. The Frying Times allows us to honour our heritage and the traditional British chip shop experience while welcoming a new generation of customers to the brand.”
The Staxton restaurant officially opens on Saturday 2nd May. While the free portions can be redeemed throughout the month, fans are urged to be quick: the offer is limited to the first 100 portions. Copies of the newspaper have been distributed across York and Scarborough, with a digital version also available online.
