The Cod & Lobster

The Cod & Lobster is probably one of the most photographed buildings in Staithes. Ideally situated in a glorious seafront position, this cosy and welcoming pub is a favourite with locals. Dog-friendly, family-friendly and serving extensive menus of homecooked grub, it’s one of the best places to eat in Staithes.
On the menus, you’ll find all manner of meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes and at lunchtime, some tasty sandwiches, paninis and salads too. The seafood offerings are impressive, to say the least, with locally sourced ingredients taking centre stage. The signature ‘Cod & Lobster’ dish is a must-try for seafood lovers. Priced at £25.95, it features oven-baked cod on a potato rosti, wilted spinach and samphire topped with half lobster and served with a rich lobster bisque.
The Captain Cook Inn
60 Staithes Lane, Staithes, Saltburn-by-the-Sea TS13 5AD
The Captain Cook Inn sits proudly at the top of Staithes and offers comfortable guest rooms, a well-stocked bar and a varied menu of homecooked meals from lunchtime until late evening. Supplemented by an ever-changing specials board, the menu at The Captain Cook Inn includes all the expected pub grub favourites such as Lasagne, Gammon, Scampi and burgers plus a great selection of vegetarian dishes and children’s meals. For a true taste of the North, tuck into one of their delicious parmos!
The Captain Cook Inn also serves a cracking Sunday lunch. Priced at just £9.95 for one or two for £18.00, it includes a choice of meat and all the traditional roast dinner trimmings.
Fox and Hounds
4 Dalehouse Bank, Staithes, Saltburn-by-the-Sea TS13 5DT
In a nearby, picturesque hamlet called Dalehouse, you’ll find a charming country pub. Set in a wooded valley, The Fox & Hounds is just a 15-minute walk from Staithes and is the perfect little spot for a relaxing lunch or post-walk pint. The current owners have been running the pub for a quarter of a century and they pride themselves on offering a peaceful environment, free from televisions, jukeboxes, fruit machines and bad language.
The menu at this cosy pub near Staithes is short but varied with something to suit most tastes. Tuck into a hearty Venison Casserole, go meat-free with a Vegetable Curry or try their delicious slow-cooked Lamb Shoulder, served with seasonable vegetables and potatoes.
The Royal George
High Street, Staithes, Saltburn-by-the-Sea TS13 5BH
The Royal George is the oldest fisherman’s pub in Staithes and one of the most popular stop-off points for people during the Cleveland Way walk. Boasting cosy interiors and a secluded beer garden for al fresco drinking and dining, it’s one of the most affordable places to eat in Staithes.
The majority of dishes on the menu at The Royal George are priced under £10 and there are plenty of tasty options to choose from. For less than a tenner, you can enjoy Fish & Chips, Homemade Beef Lasagne, Cheese and Broccoli Bake or a spicy homemade curry. Kids are also well catered for with a range of mains priced at just £4.50 each. For an additional £2, they can get a drink and dessert too.
Excelsior Fisheries
4 Staithes Lane, Staithes, Saltburn-by-the-Sea TS13 5AJ
You can’t visit the Yorkshire coast without sampling some of the area’s beautiful fish & chips. You’ll find Excelsior Fisheries at the top of Staithes Lane and their generous portions of this seaside staple are available to eat in or take away.
If you’re not in the mood for fish and chips then you’ll find plenty of other options on the menu at Excelsior Fisheries such as burgers, pies, sausages and spam fritters. The gravy serve is meant to be particularly good so be sure to get some of that to pour over your chips!
Dotty’s Vintage Tearoom
28 High Street, Staithes, Saltburn-by-the-Sea TS13 5BQ
Dotty’s Vintage Tearoom is open daily from 10:30 am until 4:30 pm and it’s one of the most loved places to eat in Staithes. With its friendly staff, quirky vintage decor and daily selection of unbelievably good homemade cakes, this independent business has an excellent reputation.
The perfect pitstop during a morning or afternoon of sightseeing, Dotty’s serves all manner of delicious homemade treats such as scones, cakes and traybakes. If after something a bit more substantial, try one of their seriously filled toasties paired with one of their exceptionally good coffees.
Cobbles of Staithes
High Street, Staithes, Saltburn-by-the-Sea TS13 5BH
Family-run Cobbles of Staithes serves paninis, cakes, sundaes, milkshakes, coffees and other light refreshments. It mainly operates as a takeaway business but it does have a certain amount of seating both inside and outside. Cobbles is one of the best places to eat in Staithes if you’ve got a craving for ice cream as the charming little independent business serves the ever-popular Brymor ice cream. Their sundaes are a must-try on a warm summer’s day and there are some truly scrumptious offerings on the menu such as ‘Captain Cook’s Chocolate Sundae’ and ‘Cobbles Cinder Sundae’.
On weekends, Cobbles extend its offering to include a variety of tasty homemade pizzas which are to collect and take away – the perfect treat to enjoy at your self-catering accommodation.
The Moorhen
Seaton Hall, Staithes, Saltburn-by-the-Sea TS13 5AT
Situated in the secluded grounds of the ancient Seaton Hall manor house is The Moorhen. Housed in a former barn, the business previously operated as a cafe only, offering menus of home-cooked delights during the day. However, back in 2018, they added an evening service which proved incredibly popular with locals and the business now operates as both a daytime cafe and an evening bistro.
The Moorhen serves a range of breakfasts, lunches, light bites and cakes during the day and delicious menus of British and European starters, mains and desserts in the evening, alongside an extensive wine list.
In addition to being set in the glorious grounds of Seaton Hall, this independent eatery is connected to an antiques mall which is well worth browsing for a treasure or two!
The Moorhen holds regular themed foodie events such as tapas nights and Indian evenings. Be sure to book ahead as these tend to fill up fast!
