Thief Hall wedding venue near Northallerton is embracing a centuries-old superstition to help couples ward off the unpredictable Yorkshire weather. The venue has partnered with Bedale-based food firm HECK! to provide “Bride’s Lucky Sausage” packs, encouraging couples to take part in the “bury a banger” ritual the night before their big day.
The tradition, which has recently gone viral on TikTok, involves burying a sausage to ensure clear skies for the ceremony. The idea for the specific HECK! packs was inspired by former Emmerdale actress Mica Keeble, who buried a sausage before her wedding to co-founder Roddy Keeble and enjoyed a sun-filled day.

Following record-breaking rainfall across Yorkshire this year, Thief Hall is the first venue to build this quirk directly into the guest experience by leaving the packs in rooms for superstitious couples. The initiative aligns with the venue’s focus on personality-led, relaxed weddings where traditional rules can be set aside for more memorable moments.

Thief Hall’s Jessica Barker said: “With the amount of rain we’ve seen across Yorkshire this year, we wanted to give couples a fun way to feel like they’re bringing a bit of sunshine to their day. We’ve seen how popular the ‘bury a banger’ tradition has become and wanted to make it as easy and as fun as possible to be part of that experience at Thief Hall. It’s just something a bit different that makes people smile.”

The trend has been fueled by social media creators, with brides across the UK sharing footage of their rituals followed by blue-sky wedding photos. While Thief Hall is leading the way, they are encouraging other Yorkshire venues to join in and support local producers while keeping the tradition alive.
Jessica Barker added, “We’re not trying to claim this as our own. If other Yorkshire venues want to put their own spin on it, either with HECK! sausages or others, we’d love to see it!”
