The North’s favourite Mexican spot is finally making its way to Leeds. On 17th April, Madre will open its doors at Wellington Place, bringing a slice of Mexico City’s energy and punchy flavours to the city centre.
If you’ve spent any time in Liverpool or Manchester, you likely already know the name. Madre has built a loyal following by focusing on the authentic spirit of Mexican dining. By day, the space is designed for relaxed lunches; by night, the lights dim, the energy shifts, and the menu dives deep into regional specialities.
The kitchen moves well beyond standard high-street fare. You can expect everything from rich Oaxacan-inspired moles and sharp salsas to Baja-style seafood and Sonoran grilled meats. It is a menu that celebrates the sheer variety of Mexico’s culinary landscape.
A core part of the experience here is sobremesa. It is the Mexican tradition of lingering at the table long after the last bite is gone, prioritising good conversation and another round of drinks over rushing out the door.
For those working nearby, the midweek lunch deal is particularly sharp. At £15 per person, you can grab a pair of tacos, a side, and a drink. Even better, their famous Taco Tuesday arrives on Cinco de Mayo, offering two-for-one tacos all day every week thereafter.
Madre is also keeping it in the family. It joins its sister venue, Salon Madre, the tequila bar and sports hangout, which opened nearby in February. The two spots are just a short walk apart, making it easy to grab dinner at Madre before heading over for margaritas and games.
Co-founder Sam Grainger, who developed the concept after extensive travels through Mexico, notes the inspiration behind the brand:
