Two Yorkshire businesses have joined forces to create a distinctive coffee experience that combines the worlds of whisky and coffee. Bridlington-based Three Ridings Coffee has partnered with the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery in Hunmanby to craft a barrel-aged coffee using beans aged in an ex-Filey Bay Flagship whisky cask.
The coffee is the result of a 20-day ageing process in a cask labelled “1929,” previously used to mature the distillery’s celebrated Filey Bay Flagship single malt whisky. The project builds on a prior collaboration between the two companies.
“When the team at Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery approached us to collaborate on a barrel-aged coffee project for the second time, we were thrilled. We believe that Yorkshire whisky and Yorkshire coffee are the perfect match,” said Leo Jarvis, co-founder of Three Ridings Coffee.
The partnership allowed the coffee team to tap into the expertise of Joe Clark, the distillery’s whisky director. “We’re always looking for innovative ways to showcase the unique character of our single malt whisky,” said Mr Clark. “Partnering with Three Ridings Coffee on this barrel-aged project was a natural fit. Their passion for quality beans and meticulous roasting techniques complement our commitment to quality and taste perfectly.”
The carefully chosen green beans, sourced from Malawi, absorbed the flavours of the Filey Bay Flagship whisky during the ageing process. Mr Clark explained, “The Flagship’s citrusy and sweet notes, along with hints of caramel and chocolate, are a fantastic match for the vibrant flavours of the Malawian coffee. By ageing the beans for 20 days in the cask, Leo and co-founder Jordan Cavalli have created a truly unique coffee that offers a subtle whisper of Filey Bay Flagship on the finish.”
The result is the Filey Bay x Three Ridings Barrel Aged Coffee, available in 190g bottles of whole beans or ground coffee for £14.95. Coffee enthusiasts can find it at the Spirit of Yorkshire cabin at the York Christmas Market until 22nd December, at the distillery shop in Hunmanby, and online at spiritofyorkshire.com and threeridingscoffee.co.uk.
“This collaboration is a testament to the exciting things that can happen when Yorkshire businesses come together. We’re confident that coffee lovers and whisky enthusiasts alike will find something special,” said Mr Clark.
The Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery, known for its field-to-bottle approach, uses 100% homegrown barley for its Filey Bay whisky, which is sold across the UK and in a growing number of international markets.
