Bradford is set to benefit from a major boost in affordable housing and job opportunities with the announcement of a new development in Bierley. The UK’s leading social enterprise, Places for People, in partnership with Vistry Group, will construct 90 affordable homes at the Woodlands Edge site. This project promises to bring much-needed housing and economic benefits to the local community.
Located in the suburb of Bierley, Woodlands Edge will feature a blend of two- and three-bedroom houses available through affordable rent and shared ownership schemes. The development also includes plans for new open spaces, green corridors, and improved pedestrian links, with enhancements to the nearby Brierley Hall Woods. These features aim to foster a sense of community and enhance the area’s natural beauty.
In addition to the housing provisions, the project is set to create significant employment opportunities. Approximately 144 full-time construction jobs and nearly 180 supply chain jobs will be generated, contributing an estimated £23 million to the local economy. Places for People is also committed to working with local schools and colleges to provide educational site visits, talks, and work placements, highlighting careers in the built environment.
Nilam Buchanan, Regional Managing Director for Central and North at Places for People, highlighted the organisation’s dedication to addressing the housing shortage in England. She stated, “As the UK’s leading social enterprise, we have a long-term plan to help address England’s chronic shortage of homes and build sustainable communities, with a big focus on delivering much-needed affordable homes. We are delighted to work with Bradford Council and our strategic partners, Vistry Group, to create 90 much-needed affordable houses for the local community. We’re also proud to provide significant employment opportunities and showcase the opportunities a career in the built environment can offer.”
Vistry Group, which secured planning permission for the project in October 2023, is eager to begin construction this summer. Andrew Poyner, Managing Director of Vistry, West Yorkshire, acknowledged the collaborative effort that made the project possible: “Thanks to the engagement and support of Bradford Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, we’ve been able to work together with Places for People to unlock this site for development. It will now deliver 90 high-quality, affordable homes, making a significant impact on Bradford’s affordable housing supply.”
The Woodlands Edge project represents a significant step towards alleviating the housing crisis in Bradford, while also fostering community engagement and economic growth. As work commences, the area can look forward to a brighter, more sustainable future.
