Following successful runs in London and at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Danusia Samal’s gig theatre show Bangers will come to Sheffield Theatres as part of its Spring 2025 tour.
Blending original music, lyrical storytelling, and UK garage beats, Bangers explores how the music we grew up with shapes our identities. Featuring tracks inspired by early 2000s and present-day R&B and garage, the show follows two strangers navigating their past while moving towards an uncertain future.
Danusia Samal, playwright, said: “I’m so excited that Bangers is coming to Sheffield – a city with such a strong musical heritage. Garage music is as British as a Sunday roast and cities across the UK have their own distinct musical identities to be celebrated so it feels vitally important for audiences around the country to connect with the sounds, the culture, and the themes that this show explores. With some brand new cast and creative team members, I can’t wait to sit with this audience and share the experience of this fresh interpretation of Bangers 2025.”
Samal, a London-born playwright, screenwriter, actor, and musician, has written plays including Busking It and Out of Sorts, which won the Theatre503 International Playwriting Award. Her screenwriting credits include Gangs of London (Sky) and Bodies (Netflix), and she has performed with theatre companies such as Clean Break and the RSC.
Vicky Moran joins as director, working with co-creator Chris Sonnex, who directed the original production. Duramaney Kamara, composer and sound designer, returns as DJ, with full casting to be announced.
Premiering at Soho Theatre in 2022, Bangers went on to a successful 2023 run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Arcola Theatre. The show has received critical praise, with The Guardian calling it “a must-see” and The Stage describing it as “a fantastic night.”
