Award-Winning North Yorkshire Farm Shop Seeks Butchery Apprentice

The butchery team at an award-winning Pickering farm shop are seeking an apprentice to help them to prepare meat for their busy farm shop and café.

Due to increased growth post-Covid, Cedarbarn Farm Shop and Café are looking for an apprentice to learn butchery skills from the experienced butchery team combined with day release study at college.

“Having farmed in the area for and run the Cedarbarn Farm Shop and Café for almost 30 years, we know that the young people in the Pickering area are second to none and we’re passionate about creating career opportunities for local people,” said Cedarbarn’s co-founder, Karl Avison who rears Aberdeen Angus beef and Abermax Cross lambs in conjunction with Low Marishes farmers, David and Sam Beal.

“Some members of our butchery team have been with us for over 14 years. This shows that butchery offers a secure, rewarding career with plenty of scope for promotion.”

The successful applicant will join the 38-strong team at Cedarbarn and will study one day a week for a Butchery Apprentice and Level 2 Certificate in Meat and Poultry at Bishop Burton College near Beverley. Modules include Level 2 Certificate for Proficiency in Meat & Poultry Industry Skills, Level 2 Knife skills, Level 2 Food Safety and Level 2 Health and Safety. The college provides transport from Pickering, Malton and Scarborough. For more information about the role, call Alison Riley on 01751 475614 or email alison@cedarbarnfarmshop.co.uk

Cedarbarn Farm Shop and Café opened in 2007. The produce in the shop and the menu in the café follows the farming year, from asparagus in the spring through strawberries, raspberries, plums, apples and rhubarb to pumpkins in the autumn.
